BCS Rankings: 10 Hot Seat Coaches Who Need Wins The Most In Week 13
BCS rankings are about the best teams in college football, but I think it's time for a little twist. Therefore, we're going to rank the 10 coaches in college football that need a win the most.
The season is winding down and it's time to figure out who's going to keep their job and who might as well start packing up their office now. Inside there are 10 coaches that could really use wins along with a description of how they got in this position.
If there are any thoughts or comments, leave them below. Any coaches I missed? Make sure to leave that as well.
No. 10: Bill Stewart, West Virginia
1 of 10
Record: 7-3
Next Game: Pittsburgh
Why He's on the Hot Seat
Bill Stewart took over for Rich Rodriguez and, since then, the Mountaineers haven't had anywhere near the level of success that they did before his tenure. It's been disappointing in Morgantown and there's pressure on Stewart to succeed.
How He Can Cool Off
West Virginia will need to beat Pittsburgh and get some help from South Florida to win the Big East and get the Mountaineers into a BCS bowl game. That high-profile bowl matchup might be enough to keep Stewart as the head coach.
No. 9: Ron Zook, Illinois
2 of 10
Record: 6-5
Next Game: Fresno State
Why He's on the Hot Seat
Any time you go 27-44 during your tenure as head coach with only a trip to the Rose Bowl to show for it, you know you're in trouble. Zook came over from Florida and hasn't done much of anything during his time as head coach to prove to me, or a lot of fans, that he deserves to keep his job.
How He Can Cool Off
Becoming bowl eligible might help Zook keep his job, but if the season ends poorly, you better believe that there's going to be strong calls for a coaching change in Illinois. Could you really blame the fans?
No. 8: Butch Davis, North Carolina
3 of 10
Record: 6-5
Next Game: Duke
Why He's on the Hot Seat
Having players run into trouble with the NCAA is never a good thing, but going 26-23 during your tenure as head coach doesn't exactly cement confidence in the school that you're the guy who can take the program to the Promised Land.
How He Can Cool Off
Beating rival Duke to finish the season and winning the Tar Heels' bowl game could go a long way to help save his job as head coach and buy some time before possible sanctions from the NCAA are handed out, after the events of the past few years.
No. 7: Rick Neuheisel, UCLA
4 of 10
Record: 4-6
Next Game: Arizona State
Why He's on the Hot Seat
Another down year has continued the trend for Rick Neuheisel at UCLA. He's got a record below .500 and it doesn't seem like he's gonna turn it around any time soon. The Bruins are not bowl eligible this season and they will need to win out to make that a reality.
How He Can Cool Off
The Bruins will have to win the final two games of the season to become bowl eligible, and that may be enough to keep Neuheisel around as head coach of UCLA.
No. 6: Dave Wannstedt, Pittsburgh
5 of 10
Record: 6-4
Next Game: West Virginia
Why He's on the Hot Seat
There always seems to be a high amount of hype around the Pittsburgh program, but when the season is said and done, there's nothing to be shown for it. Dave Wannstedt hasn't been terrible for the Panthers, but he's not delivered anything close to what expectations were for him and his program.
How He Can Cool Off
Winning the Big East title would go a long way towards getting himself off the hot seat and into a BCS bowl game. He just would need to hope he doesn't get blown out in that game because a poor showing would be a disaster for his job security.
No. 5: Turner Gill, Kansas
6 of 10
Record: 3-8
Next Game: Missouri
Why He's on the Hot Seat
Any time you're a new hire, people have higher expectations than 3-8 in your first season. It's been a disaster in Kansas this year and, with a new athletic director coming in for the Jayhawks, Gill's job security is on unstable ground right now.
How He Can Cool Off
I'm not sure there's anything Gill can do. His fate is out of his hands right now. A win over rival Missouri wouldn't hurt though. A little good faith with the fans and the bosses can go a long way when you're trying to keep a job.
No. 4: Randy Shannon, Miami
7 of 10
Record: 7-4
Next Game: South Florida
Why He's on the Hot Seat
Miami is used to having a high level of success and that has not been there under Randy Shannon's tenure as coach of the Hurricanes. Shannon has been average at best and, coming into a year when there were a lot of hopes for the team, a 7-4 record has a lot of people disappointed.
How He Can Cool Off
Winning out and finishing the season with a big bowl-game win would give Shannon some momentum heading into the offseason and the recruiting season. However, Miami can always draw talent and Shannon hasn't done much with it.
No. 3: Rich Rodriguez, Michigan
8 of 10
Record: 7-4
Next Game: Ohio State
Why He's on the Hot Seat
Another hot start has turned into another cold finish for Rich Rodriguez in Ann Arbor, and he was lucky to escape with a slap on the wrist from the NCAA after facing possible sanctions earlier this year. The Wolverines haven't been competitive for a national title and Michigan fans aren't happy.
How He Can Cool Off
Helping crush the hopes of rival Ohio State in the annual rivalry game this weekend would be a huge win for the Wolverines and, most importantly, Rodriguez, who could use some good press this time of year. It is the holidays after all.
No. 2: Bill Lynch, Indiana
9 of 10
Record: 4-7
Next Game: Purdue
Why He's on the Hot Seat
Well, the Hoosiers are not bowl eligible this year and no longer can become so. That's pretty much all you need to know about Lynch and his job security. It doesn't help that he's 18-30 since he came to Indiana as the head coach.
How He Can Cool Off
There's nothing saving Lynch now. He's going to be fired at the end of the season and the Hoosiers will be looking for a new coach after the season.
No. 1: Mike Locksley, New Mexico
10 of 10
Record: 1-10
Next Game: TCU
Why He's on the Hot Seat
Do you really need to know more than a 1-10 start, sure to be 1-11 after TCU comes through and rips New Mexico to shreds? It's just a sad state of affairs in New Mexico and there is no defending that type of performance.
How He Can Cool Off
There is no cooling off. If I were him, I'd be slowly removing my belongings from my office. In fact, I'd save New Mexico the trouble of firing me and just resign right after the last game of the season. Why try to fool anyone?
