BCS Rankings Week 13: Who's Overrated and Underrated In Latest BCS Poll?
The latest College Football BCS rankings came out today. With one week remaining in the regular season, these rankings have almost determined who will be playing the BCS bowls and championship game.
There are, as always, some rankings that will be debated.
No.1-5: All five ranked teams have kept their places since last week. They are in order: Oregon, Auburn, TCU, Boise State and LSU.
It's hard to argue with Oregon and Auburn being selected as No. 1 and No. 2. Oregon had a bye this week, coming off a 15-13 squeaker against Cal. They are ranked first and sixth in points and rushing yards per game in college football and have a 10-0 record.
Auburn, led by Heisman leading candidate Cameron Newton, had a bye as well, and is coming off a 49-31 pounding of a decent team in Georgia. The Tigers are ranked third in rushing yards and fifth in scoring in college football and have an 11-0 record.
The third spot is where I have a problem. Although TCU is 11-0 and has indeed beaten two higher ranked teams than Boise State, it is simply unfair what is happening to the Broncos.
They have been undefeated for two years now, both teams that were ranked ahead of them before the season (Alabama and Ohio State) have lost, and they still find themselves out of the BCS Championship picture. It is a crime what is being done to this team.
I also have a problem with No. 5. LSU lost to Auburn. Stanford lost to Oregon. Oregon is ranked higher than Auburn. And LSU almost lost to Ole Miss this week.
No. 6-10: LSU should be at No. 6.
Wisconsin at No. 7 and Ohio State at No. 8 are the right calls. Ohio State's only loss of the season is to Wisconsin.
I actually like Michigan State at No. 9 instead of No. 10. They've beaten a higher ranked team than Oklahoma State (Wisconsin). And they both have the same record.
No. 11-15: Alabama is justified at No. 11 over Arkansas. Alabama beat Arkansas this season.
How Oklahoma is one spot higher than Missouri is beyond me. Missouri beat Oklahoma this year and they have the same records.
Virginia Tech, ranked at No. 16, deserves the No. 13 ranking, its one ranked loss against Boise State (Missouri and Oklahoma are No. 14 and No. 15 respectively in my eyes).
No. 16-20: Nebraska, ranked at No. 15, should be dropped to No. 16 based on Virginia Tech.
No. 20 Utah is grossly underrated, with a 9-2 record and losing to TCU and beating a sleeper team in San Diego State. Utah should be No. 17.
Texas A&M, at 8-3 and coming off a big 9-6 win against Nebraska, is ranked No. 17 and drops to my No. 18 based on Utah.
South Carolina, at 8-3 and losing to two ranked teams is ranked No. 18 and drops to my No. 19 based on Utah.
Nevada, despite being 10-1, should be No. 20 because they have not played a ranked team all season and lost to unranked Hawaii.
No. 21-25: Arizona and Florida State at No. 21 and No. 22 are justified. Both have three losses. Arizona lost to Stanford. Florida State lost to Oklahoma. Close one there though.
North Carolina State is justified at No. 23 with a 8-3 record.
Mississippi State should switch places with No. 24 Iowa. Both have four losses. Mississippi State lost to powerhouses Auburn, LSU, Alabama, and Arkansas. Iowa lost to an unranked team in Northwestern.
