If Auburn Falls, Will TCU Really Beat Out Boise State for the BCS Title Game?
For once it seems the BCS standings have remained rather calm at the top. Since No. 1's Alabama and Ohio State lost in consecutive weeks, little has changed.
The two major conference teams, Oregon and Auburn, sit atop the standings which determine which teams will play for the national championship.
However this year there seems to include even more controversy then in the past. Two more undefeated teams, TCU and Boise State, are No. 3 and 4 in the standings.
The likelihood that both teams will run the table and finish the year 12-0 increases with each blowout win.
What Happens If Nothing Changes?
So what happens if all four teams finish their schedules without a blemish?
Obviously TCU and Boise State would be shunned from the title game and instantly become poster boy programs for why college football needs a playoff system.
But there are still plenty of games to be played until we can determine a set matchup for the national championship, and that's where the Cam Newton situation comes into play.
The Auburn star has been under fire as of late for allegations that he offered to play for money, and increasing pressure from the media and the NCAA could force the program to sit their Heisman candidate quarterback.
If this were to happen and Auburn slipped up against rival Alabama, or South Carolina in the SEC championship game on December 4th, then who would be next in line for the BCS title game?
That answer remains to be seen, but at the moment it would be TCU, and not the Boise State Broncos, who are undefeated the last two seasons, including a win over TCU in last year's Fiesta Bowl.
Boise State began the season ahead of TCU in the rankings, but somehow without a loss or any major TCU win, they were jumped by the Horned Frogs.
Now the Broncos will likely be watching the title game from home unless a wild three weeks of college football is upon us, which is very possible.
Oregon still has two games left against conference opponents, but lessons learned in a trap game at California last week in which they won 15-13 might have ruined any chance they have of falling the rest of the way.
Who Slips Up?
Therefore breaking down the most likely BCS scenario at this point in the season becomes quite simple.
Oregon will win it's last two games and finish 12-0 and No. 1 in the BCS standings. Also remember they don't play a conference championship game so they would be a lock for the title game at that point.
Moving on to the No. 2 ranked team in the BCS, the Auburn Tigers. Auburn will slip up against rival Alabama in the Iron Bowl this Friday.
But if not there, then certainly against South Carolina's stifling defense in the SEC championship game. Also remember the SEC championship is played on a neutral site and Auburn struggled to get past the Gamecocks at home earlier this season.
Now Auburn is erased from the championship picture and the Ducks still need an opponent.
That's when we journey to heartbreak hotel, which will likely be located in Boise, Idaho on the night the bowl matchups are released.
TCU has one game remaining against New Mexico and a win there might take them one step closer the the program's first national championship appearance.
However Boise State still has two games left on the schedule and a two big wins over Nevada and Utah State to round out the season might be enough to jump the Horned Frogs.
Unfortunately if the past tells us anything its that when a win is met with a win, very little changes atop the standings.
If the computers chose to place TCU above Boise State, then it was most likely for a reason. Thus making it even more important that Virginia Tech win out and win the ACC championship to help lift the Broncos' resume.
Can It Really Be?
Finally we arrive at the biggest question of them all, if Oregon wins out and Auburn falls, will TCU really beat out Boise State for a spot in the national championship game?
Yes.
It would make many unhappy, including myself.
No team should have back to back undefeated seasons which include a win over the team that finished ahead of them and miss out on a chance to play for it all.
Everyone outside of Oregon and TCU would have to feel for Boise State and their seniors.
However, If Auburn miraculously wins out as does Oregon, then we do not have this discussion because both teams clearly play a tougher schedule.
But the most likely scenario tells us that TCU will be first in line when Auburn trips on the Cam Newton scandal in the coming weeks.
This can't happen.
