The Top 5 Candidates for the Cowboys Head Coaching Job

Mike RNov 12, 2010

Unless the Cowboys go on a massive second half winning streak, Jason Garrett will not keep the head coaching job. The Cowboys will have a number of candidates interested in their head coaching job. Here are my picks for the Top Five candidates for the Cowboys coaching job.

1. Jon Gruden

It is clear that Gruden is itching to get back into coaching. There aren't many jobs in the NFL that are better than being the head coach of the Cowboys. Gruden would be a perfect fit because he has the fire and intensity that the Cowboys need. The team is already locked into a number of long term contracts with players like Tony Romo, Miles Austin, DeMarcus Ware and Roy Williams. Gruden works best with a veteran team. He also doesn't need total control over player personnel decisions.

2. Bill Cowher

The only reason that Cowher is No. 2 on the list is because of control. Cowher is in a position where he would demand the final say over all personnel decisions. He has a 15-year track record of success and is in high demand. Jones could get Cowher to Big D if he is willing to suffer the hit to his ego.

3. John Fox

Fox may have struggled the last two years in Carolina, but he is still respected around the NFL as a top notch football mind. Fox has been able to post winning seasons whenever he has had a competent quarterback to lead his team. He took an average Panthers team to the Super Bowl in the past. Fox has never coached a team with the talent of the Cowboys. He has the demeanor and coaching ability to lead the Cowboys back to the Super Bowl.

4. Bob Stoops

Stoops is a wild card because he has been courted by the NFL in the past. He turned around an underachieving Oklahoma program and turned them into a national power. Jones has always been a fan of Stoops. Don't forget he has taken a place on a green college head coach before when he took a chance on Jimmy Johnson.

5. Brian Billick

Billick is a longshot, but he may be able to get an interview in Dallas. Billick has been out of coaching for three years since he was let go by the Ravens back in 2007. He would jump at the opportunity to coach the Cowboys and live up to his reputation as an "offensive guru." His only chance at the job would be if he impresses Jones during the interview.
