Georgia Football: Should the Bulldogs Embrace the Role of Spoiler?

Eric BowmanNov 9, 2010

Let’s be real here folks. It hasn’t been the season you thought it’d be. Georgia failed to meet expectations and is fighting for postseason football.

A win this weekend guarantees bowl eligibility for the Bulldogs.

But can they do it? The Bulldogs have not beaten a team with a winning record all season. The five teams they have beaten are a combined 13-33 on the year. Can they somehow beat a 10-0 team this Saturday?

It’s quite possible they can. If Georgia plays to the talent level it has, they could steal a victory from the unbeaten Tigers on Saturday.  Whether or not they do is entirely up to them.

Should Georgia embrace the role of spoiler?

Yes, absolutely.

The Bulldogs have the ability and are very capable of making it five in a row over Auburn. The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry is always a tough matchup no matter where the teams rank. Seven of the last 13 games have gone to the team with the lower ranking.

Georgia has a chance to ruin Auburn’s season. They go into the game with nothing to lose and everything to gain. A win over Auburn demolishes everything the Tigers have accomplished this season and could very well end the Heisman run of one Cam Newton.

The Bulldogs should relish in the fact that they have the opportunity to end the title hopes of Auburn. As well as the  Heisman campaign for Newton. Because that’s the only way they can win: Shut down Cam Newton.

Newton is the Tigers offense and if the Bulldogs can find a way to stop him, they have a legit possibility at winning the game. Georgia will have to score early and create turnovers. Not to mention fight until the very end.

Auburn averages 44 points a game while Georgia gives up an average of 19 points a game. Newton will be a real test for the Bulldogs 3-4 defense.

If only the Bulldogs would’ve recruited  the 6’6”, 250-pound quarterback from College Park, Georgia. That’s only a hour and 45 minutes from Athens. Just sayin'.

Enjoy the moment Bulldogs. You have the option to spoil 2010 for Auburn. There is no pressure for this game because the SEC is far out of reach for Georgia. Bowl eligibility is still in reach as Georgia Tech comes into town at the end of the month.

Embrace this chance and put a hurt on the Tigers—or is it Eagles—Auburn fans sure are confused sometimes…
