Dallas Cowboys: 10 Ways To Resurrect This Season
At 1-6 it is safe to say that the Dallas Cowboys season has not gone to plan so far. Quarterback Tony Romo may be out for the year and the team overall looks weak and listless.
Although it may be too late to totally resurrect this season there are some ways improvements could be made to allow the Cowboys to creep back into contention.
Some of the reasons involve game planning changes and some involve personnel changes that could also improve the team going forward.
10. Solidify the Kicking Game
1 of 10
David Buehler hasn't been terrible this year hitting 9 of 12 field goals, but he is hardly the reliable force that a good team needs at the kicking position.
The Cowboys need to get a top flight kicker to solidify this aspect of their special teams.
9. Commit Less Penalties
2 of 10
Penalties have been a problem in Dallas for years and before some kind of real discipline is put in place they will continue to be a problem.
Part of the problem is coaching part of it is player discipline, but if both don't improve there is no way this ship can be righted.
8. Blitz More
3 of 10
At 1-6 its time to start taking some chances. More blitzing and more pressure on opposing QB's will help hide their weak secondary.
They certainly have the personnel with players like Demarcus Ware and they need to use it to their advantage and make it the cornerstone of this defense.
7. Feed Jason Witten
4 of 10
Get back to basics. Jason Witten has been established as a great Tight End in this league and the Cowboys have gotten away from him in recent years.
I'm sure teams have keyed on him more but the Boys need to find a way to make Witten a real weapon again.
6. Run the Ball More
5 of 10
The Cowboys need to slow the game down, especially without Tony Romo. They need to try to control the time of possession and the best way to do that is by running the football.
They have capable backs in Marion Barber and Felix Jones. Barber's physical style appears to have worn him down but he is still capable of carrying the ball for close to four yards a carry.
Combined with home-run hitter Felix Jones there is no reason the Cowboys shouldn't be able to form a solid running game.
5. Play Better At Home and Don't Be Intimidated By the Stadium
6 of 10
The Cowboys are yet to win a game at home this year and a lot of it I think has to do with the intimidating presence of its own home stadium.
The incredibly capacity puts an enormous amount of eyes on you but in addition just the grandness of the stadium makes the game seem bigger than it is. Although everything is bigger in Texas this stadium may be too big time for the talent of the home team.
4. The More Touches For Dez Bryant the Better
7 of 10
Dez Bryant is a beast. He has proven to be effective running after the catch and he has been impressive as a possession receiver and as a deep threat. He has even impressed in the punt return game.
He has been one of few bright spots this season and the Cowboys need to make him a more integral part of their offense. This guy is the future of this offense and they need to start building him up now.
3. Hire a Real General Manager
8 of 10
In the midst of one of the worst seasons in team history, it is time for Jerry Jones to scale back a little and put a real GM in charge. Jones can still have his say, but there needs to be a real structure to this football team.
They certainly have the resources and cache to get a talented GM and they need to take advantage of that and make this happen if they want to compete short term and long term.
2. Fire Wade Phillips
9 of 10
Phillips seems like a good guy and he is certainly a fine coach. But he's had his chances and over and over again he has proven he is not capable.
The talent may or may not be there, but either way he has not gotten this team to play up to its potential. The time is now to make a change, everyone knows its coming in the offseason so if I'm Jerry Jones, I'm getting the distraction out of the way.
1. Hire Bill Cowher
10 of 10
After firing Phillips, the Cowboys needs to be looking for a hard nosed coach with a proven track record. Cowher brings all that and more and would be the perfect fit in Dallas.
He has proven he can win and he has done it in a place with great history similar to Dallas. He is more of a disciplinarian than Phillips and that could be the difference that propels this team to elite status.
It is unlikely they would be able to make this happen this year, but whether it happens now or in the offseason, this is the move that needs to be made for Dallas to return to its desired status.
