BCS Standings 2010: 10 Mistakes in the Latest Rankings

Adam SpencerNov 1, 2010

The BCS hates Boise State. This week's BCS rankings revealed that the Broncos were once again leapfrogged, this time by the TCU Horned Frogs.

You can't argue with the top two teams, as Oregon and Auburn have been superb all year long. But there are a few spots in the BCS rankings that could use some changes.

There are teams that are ranked too high, too low and one team that isn't ranked at all that should be. The computers just can't seem to pick the top 25 college football teams correctly.

Here are the 10 worst mistakes in the BCS rankings this week.

10. Mississippi State

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are currently ranked 20th in the BCS standings.

That seems a little bit too high to me. The Bulldogs have already lost to Auburn and LSU, and their only "big" win was a three-point victory over Florida. But we've all seen that the Gators aren't quite the team they have been the past few years.

This problem will fix itself, most likely, as Mississippi State plays Alabama and Arkansas the next two weeks.

9. Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State is ranked too low at 17th. The Cowboys have lost only once all year, a 51-41 loss to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Their offense is one of the best in the country and can be competitive with any team in the country for one game.

Their defense needs some work, but that offense can cover up a lot of the defensive deficiencies.

8. Florida State

The Seminoles are currently ranked 24th, one spot ahead of the North Carolina State team that beat them this week. How does that make sense?

The Wolfpack has an identical record to Florida State and won the head-to-head matchup, but Florida State is still ranked higher.

North Carolina deserves to jump the Seminoles in the rankings.  Florida State needs to be dropped from the rankings altogether, since there is a team that isn't ranked that should be.

And that team is...

7. Hawaii

Hawaii is 7-2 and has the best passing offense in the nation. They've beaten Nevada, a team currently ranked in the BCS standings.

The Warriors are definitely more deserving of a spot in the BCS rankings than Florida State right now.

Hawaii plays Boise State this week, so we'll see if they are for real or not, but for now, they are at least better than the Seminoles.

6. Arkansas

5 of 10
AUBURN, AL - OCTOBER 16: Quarterback Ryan Mallett #15 of the Arkansas Razorbacks warms up before the game against the Auburn Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium on October 16, 2010 in Auburn, Alabama. The Tigers beat the Razorbacks 65-43. (Photo by Mike Zarr

The Razorbacks are a good team in a very tough conference, but their ranking of 18th in the BCS is a little too high.

Arkansas hasn't beaten a ranked team this year, while the team sitting at 19th, South Carolina, has a victory against Alabama.

I'd flip-flop the Gamecocks and Razorbacks, but that situation will probably be corrected this week when Arkansas travels to South Carolina.

5. Alabama

6 of 10

Alabama is the best one-loss team in the country, and the BCS rankings rate them as such.

But, the sixth-ranked Crimson Tide are better than the Utes of Utah, who are currently rated fifth.

I'd pick Alabama by two touchdowns against Utah, no matter where they played.

4. LSU

7 of 10

The LSU Tigers are currently 10th in the BCS rankings, a clear indication that computers don't take style into consideration.

LSU may become the first team to complete a season without actually having an offense. It seems as if Les Miles just sends out 11 random players who have never played together whenever the Tigers have the ball.

But that defense is stifling, so LSU definitely deserves to be ranked, just a little bit lower than 10th.

3. Michigan State

I don't understand how Michigan State dropped from fifth to 14th with their loss against a ranked Iowa team while Missouri only dropped from sixth to 12th with their loss against a ranked Nebraska team.

I would have had the Spartans drop from fifth to 12th and the Tigers drop from sixth to 13th. Both teams lost ugly games on the road, so why should the Spartans be penalized more than the Tigers?

2. Oklahoma

9 of 10
COLUMBIA, MO - OCTOBER 23: Landry Jones #12 of the Oklahoma Sooners in action against the Missouri Tigers at Faurot Field/Memorial Stadium on October 23, 2010 in Columbia, Missouri. The Tigers beat the Sooners 36-27. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Imag

Oklahoma hasn't been dominant all year, winning close games against weaker non-conference opponents and losing a game to the Missouri Tigers because of sloppy play.

They've beaten a disappointing Texas team, but haven't really picked up a signature win this year.

Somehow though, they find themselves sitting eighth in the BCS. I'd give Wisconsin the eighth spot and drop the Sooners to at least ninth.

1. Boise State

Boise State beat Louisiana Tech 49-20 on Tuesday night and still lost ground in the latest BCS rankings.

The Broncos were once again leapfrogged, this time by a fellow non-BCS conference team, TCU.

TCU beat UNLV by a score of 48-6 and definitely deserve to be ranked very highly, but they shouldn't have jumped Boise State.

The BCS computers should have kept the Broncos at third in the standings and kept TCU at fourth. Switching them just didn't make any sense, just like everything else the BCS does.
