Mack Brown: Does He Have Enough Goodwill to Withstand A Late Season Meltdown?
Mack Brown came to Texas in the 90s and built a consistent winner. Sometimes success is your own worst enemy.
With Texas fans now accustomed to 10-win seasons and BCS bowls, will an eight-win season cause the coach in waiting to wait a little less?
Mack Brown is a proud man who has earned the right to leave on his own terms in his own time, but so did Bobby Bowden and Phillip Fulmer, who had similar good streaks and at least as many championship rings.
They too thought they could and should name their own departure date, but we all know how that worked out.
So the question is, will the Texas fans allow Mack Brown the chance to right the ship, or be gun shy that they could lose coach in waiting Will Muschamp, who may get tired of waiting much longer?
And if Mack comes back next season, do we place him on the coaches hot seat list?
Of course you must.
College football has turned into a "What have you done for me lately" kind of sport when it comes to coaches.
The Baylor loss kept Texas for shooting for a 10-win season and now exposed it as a team that may have even more losses as the season goes on.
Kansas State now certainly looks capable of beating Texas, as do Oklahoma State and Texas A&M. Should the unthinkable happen and Texas end up not even making a bowl trip, you may not have to wait to next season to not only have his seat hot, but to explode in flames.
Teams like Florida are showing the pain of losing its star player and quarterback, but not even Florida is showing pains like this.
For Mack Brown, the nation's highest salary comes with a price of its own. How soon will he have to pay it?
