South Carolina Gamecock Running Back Brian Maddox: 2010's Unsung Hero

Alex RobertsOct 29, 2010

Somewhere between the incredible play of freshman sensation Marcus Lattimore and the potential SEC East championship, a great story is beginning to blossom for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Brian Maddox, come on down.

This is a story of perseverance and a story of a player who played his role for his team, and is now getting his opportunity to shine.

A big time player coming out of T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, South Carolina, Maddox looked to be the big, bruising back that the team desperately needed.

Through the first three years of his career, he didn't see the playing time that he anticipated.  He started out 2009 as the starting running back, only to see his spot taken by a freshman by the name of Kenny Miles.

Then, to add insult to injury, he was again listed as the starting running back headed into 2010, only to lose his spot to another freshman, Marcus Lattimore.

He had every opportunity to cut and run.  His 5'11'', 229-pound frame would be an intimidating presences in a Division II school.

Instead, he never gave up.  He continued to fight for the university that he loved.  He even took a position change, and became the starting fullback for a couple of games.

He continued to work hard in practice and became the go-to backup for Marcus.  He averaged a healthy 5.8 yards per carry and showed a knack for big runs.  No South Carolina fan will ever forget his "neck kick" play against Auburn.

But, he had one final moment of disrespect.  When Marcus Lattimore went down with an injury in a loss to Kentucky, Kenny Miles was slotted into the starting lineup for the game against Vanderbilt.

That should have been the straw that broke the camels back.  He was heartbroken.

His response?  To work even harder.

Everything changed against Vanderbilt.  With Kenny Miles struggling to find room, Spurrier called upon his under-appreciated player.

His final stat line: 24 carries, 146 yards.  He averaged 6.1 yards per carry and a touchdown.  Now, people are discussing a dual-threat backfield of Lattimore and Maddox.  Now, coaches are praising his effort and ability.  Now, he has an outside shot at a career in football.

He has his opportunity.  He is no longer "starting fullback and backup running back."  He is a legitimate pounder and complimentary back to Marcus Lattimore.

Brian Maddox will never forget the game on Saturday, October 23, 2010.  That's the day that it all turned around.

He has been rewarded for his service.  Can't think of another player who deserves it more.

Gamecock Nation thanks you.
