College Football 2010 Projected Final Rankings After Week 7 (Top 10)
Isn't it too early to predict the final Top 10 rankings?
No, it's not too early to predict the Top 10 that will finish off the 2010 college football season.
Besides, what's the point of the preseason rankings? After a chaotic Week 7, it wouldn't be surprising if many of these teams drop out of the Top 25 by the season's end.
However, I'm going to give it a shot. Many of the teams have predictable schedules until bowl season, making it easy. There will be surprises, though.
Will the SEC field another national champion? Will there be more huge upsets shaking up the whole Top 10? Will a non-AQ make it into the BCS title game?
If you cannot wait until the final rankings after the title game to know the Top 10, read on...
Top 10 Honorable Mentions and Heisman Trophy Winner
1 of 11
(In alphabetical order)
Arizona (11-2, will contend for Pac-10 title.)
Florida State (11-3, will lose another regular season game and ACC championship.)
Iowa (10-3, will lose one or two of the three between Indiana, Northwestern and bowl game. Too inconsistent.)
LSU (10-3, will lose to Alabama, Auburn and maybe to another team. Mad Hatter's luck runs out.)
Stanford (10-3, will lose to Oregon State and Arizona.)
Utah (12-1, will lose to TCU but win bowl game.)
Cameron Newton will win the 2010 Heisman Trophy.
1. Cameron Newton
2. Kellen Moore
3. LaMichael James
Quarterbacks have the edge.
10. Nebraska (11-3)
2 of 11
The loss to Texas was devastating...however, they will win the rest of their regular season games.
They will eventually play Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game. This year will be similar to last year, and they will lose in a close one.
Although they receive an at-large bid and play in the Sugar Bowl, they will lose a thriller.
9. Michigan State (11-2)
3 of 11
I'm calling for Michigan State to lose to Iowa. They make it to the Rose Bowl and lose...not bad for not being ranked until Week 3.
8. Ohio State (11-2)
4 of 11
Sorry...they won't make a BCS bowl this season. They are going to fall to Iowa late in the season.
Normally two losses in such a strong conference would call for an at-large BCS bid, but they won't jump TCU, Nebraska and Auburn for those extra bids.
However, they still win their bowl game, and voters won't resist voting "tOSU" into the Top 10. They will also jump fellow Big Ten member Michigan State because they didn't play each other.
7. Virginia Tech (12-2)
5 of 11
What? Virgina Tech in the Top 10? What about the loss to FCS James Madison?
With teams like almighty Duke, defenseless Georgia Tech, inconsistent and depleted UNC, interception-prone Miami and rebuilding Virginia left on the schedule, what's not to like about the Hokies winning the ACC?
They will beat Pittsburgh in the Orange Bowl...no one will be watching this game outside of Virginia.
6. Auburn (11-2)
6 of 11
Auburn will beat LSU. It will all come down to the Iron Bowl for Auburn and the Heisman winner, Cameron Newton.
However, Alabama is too good this year for a two-loss season and will end Auburn's SEC title hopes and eventual national championship aspirations.
Although they get picked for an at-large bid in the Fiesta Bowl, they will lose a close one.
5. Oregon (12-1)
7 of 11
I'm calling for Oregon to slip up late in the season...Arizona or Oregon State will hand the Ducks their first (or second) loss. Voters have short-term memories, so they won't be playing for a national championship.
However, they will win the Rose Bowl this year, beating Michigan State.
4. Oklahoma (13-1)
8 of 11
This is where the mind games begin...
Oklahoma is going to go undefeated. They are going to crush the great teams and slip by the weaker teams remaining in the schedule.
They will eventually jump undefeated TCU and Boise State, making them the No. 1 team heading into the national championship.
There will be the rematch of the century. (Even if we are only 10 years into the century.)
Oklahoma will lose to Boise State in the national championship.
Why? The old school college football fans will be loud and proud...they will HATE the idea of a non-AQ school in the BCS national championship and expect Oklahoma to blow them out. Oklahoma will feel the same way and expect to win. Oklahoma and Bob Stoops are notorious for faltering in big games, and they will lose though...
(Or Oklahoma will avenge its Fiesta Bowl loss to Boise State and will destroy them. If Boise State loses, they'll finish fifth and Oklahoma will obviously finish No. 1.)
3. Alabama (13-1)
9 of 11
Alabama is going to win the super competitive SEC West. Then Alabama is going to beat the weak SEC East opponent decisively. However, this won't be enough to jump an undefeated Boise State, TCU and Oklahoma.
They will beat Nebraska in a thrilling Sugar Bowl. They will be receiving a lot of first-place votes by the season's end.
The SEC's streak of four national championships will be snapped.
2. TCU (13-0)
10 of 11
The schedule is easy enough...except for the Utah game.
However, TCU will slip by Utah and will finish off the year with a 100-point victory over UNM.
Their schedule is strong enough to jump Boise State. However, because of their loss to Boise State in last year's Fiesta Bowl, the voters will acknowledge Boise State still has the better team.
TCU will receive an at-large bid and will play in the Fiesta Bowl. This year, the Horned Frogs will be ready...they will also try to prove that they were the ones deserving of the title game over Boise State.
TCU beats Auburn, finishing 13-0. They will receive more first-place votes than Alabama.
1. Boise State (13-0)
11 of 11
Boise State will go undefeated...is it surprising?
They will be the only remaining undefeated teams along with Oklahoma and TCU.
Oklahoma will eventually jump TCU and Boise State, making the Sooners the No. 1 team.
Boise State will have quality wins over Virginia Tech, Oregon State and Nevada. TCU can't jump them because Boise State beat them last year.
However, Oklahoma won't be able to get revenge for BSU-OU PART I...Oklahoma is too inconsistent, and they don't win the big games. Boise State has the best team in college football, they have been preparing for this game, and Chris Petersen has something up his sleeve (in case it goes out of hand for the Broncos).
This game can go either way though...it will be a great national championship. I have to pick a winner since college football allows no ties...
Boise State wins BSU-OU PART II in another thriller.
