NFL Frankenstein: Building The Perfect Player: Defensive Back Edition
Only two more editions left for the NFL Frankenstein series. Today we do what might be impossible and try and combine the qualities of the league's best safeties and cornerbacks into one great player who will be able to cover any wideout in the NFL. This guy is going be fast, a sure tackler and have great playmaking ability. So, without further adieu, let's get started on the ultimate defensive back.
Brain: Ed Reed
1 of 8
Ed Reed is probably the most electrifying playmaker in the secondary. He's been able to make a career off of the big play, and that's what I want for our monster. With this veteran mind that has learned when and where to take risks through a long career, our guy will never be caught out of position and always be there to pluck the ball out of the air or make a game-changing sack.
Eyes: Darren Sharper
2 of 8
Sharper is the best player in the league at reading the quarterback's eyes and making a play on the ball. He sees things that other people don't and that's why he's racked up 63 interceptions in his career. His ability to recognize where the ball is going to be and make a play on it are unparalleled. That's the kind of vision our monster needs, and he will get it and use it become the best in the world at what he does.
Heart: Charles Woodson
3 of 8
To be able to continue to get better even as you age, a player has to have enormous amounts of desire to be the best at his position. This is what Woodson has down throughout his career. He plays with a fierce intensity and knows that he has to want it more than anyone else to continually stay on top of his game as he ages. Our monster may not be as old as Woodson, but he will bring that same intensity and desire to the field and that will make him even better.
Body: Antonio Cromartie
4 of 8
Cromartie stands tall at 6'2" and weighs in at 210 pounds. This makes him one of the bigger and more physical cornerbacks in the league. With this big frame at our monster's disposal, he will be able to match up with the bigger receivers in the NFL. Not even Randy Moss's huge body is going to give this guy trouble.
Arms: Antoine Winfield
5 of 8
Winfield is the best tackling cornerback in the league. He almost never misses a tackle and completely shuts down his side of the field in both the run and pass. This versatility has made him into a great player who's finally getting his due in the media. With his sure tackling arms on our player, he will be able to light wide receivers, get big sacks and shut down any run that comes outside the tackles. He may not have have the hit power of some of the safeties, but he will never make a big miss either.
Hands: Darrelle Revis
6 of 8
Revis is probably the best shut down corner in the league, and it's because he knows how to use his hands. From getting a jam on the receiver to knocking down a pass to making a game changing interception, Revis excels at everything. Our guy will take his ability and meld it with his other body parts to create a dominate player who will be the biggest nuisance opposing wideouts have ever met.
Legs: Adrian Wilson
7 of 8
Wilson is one of the best athletes in the game today. There's a Youtube video that shows him basically jumping over the head of a grown man. It may not sound as impressive when you just read it so just go watch the video, I can wait. Okay, now that you've seen that, tell me you don't want those pogo stick legs on our monster. This guy is basically going to be able to leap over buildings in a single bound like the real life Superman. It won't even be fair.
Feet: Troy Polamalu
8 of 8
Coming out of college, Polamalu ran a 4.35 which is pretty quick, but I think when it comes to game speed it's more like 4.0 flat. The guy is all over the field and comes out of nowhere to make huge plays. You would think teams would know where he is, given his trademark hair, but he uses his amazing speed to cover the entire field. Our player will use this speed to his advantage and become the best playmaking defensive back in the NFL.
So that's it for today's edition. Did I make any glaring mistakes? If so, tell me about it and check back tomorrow for the final edition—the quarterbacks.
