College Football Rankings: Power Ranking the Top 5 Teams
The first half of the college football season has ended, and the first BCS rankings will be released on Sunday night.
ESPN had its traditional overkill of coverage and produced a special previewing what they project they will be and had their "experts" weigh in on the subject as well.
After watching about 10 minutes of the show, I figured these rankings are just as relevant as mine—why not power rank the teams myself? So, I did.
Here are the top five teams from the first half of the college football season...
5. TCU Horned Frogs
1 of 5
TCU has done everything asked of them so far. They just don't really play anybody. It's not necessarily their fault, but Oregon State always seems to start the season off poorly, and most will write off that win they had over the Beavers.
TCU will gain credit if they can roll through a decent Mountain West conference that includes Utah, BYU and a surprisingly good Air Force team.
4. Boise State Broncos
2 of 5
I'll give Boise credit for at least attempting to schedule some tough non-conference opponents in Virginia Tech and Oregon State. There's no way they could've known Tech would turn out to be less than what everyone thought they were going to be.
That being said, once they get into conference play, they need to be winning by at least 30 every night. They also need to be on upset alert for Hawaii and Nevada, both of which have very potent offenses.
3. Ohio State Buckeyes
3 of 5
The Buckeyes have a great three-headed rushing attack with Brandon Saine, Dan Herron and QB Terrelle Pryor. They also sport one of the toughest and biggest defenses in the country.
However, Pryor's accuracy has been suspect on the deep routes so far, and they have had a couple close calls.
They have the most talent of any team in the country, and when they put it together, it's a fun thing to watch. They just haven't done that yet. If they don't get up for the game at Camp Randall this Saturday, it could be bye-bye Buckeyes.
2. Nebraska Cornhuskers
4 of 5
Nebraska has quietly flown under the radar while winning its first five games and looking very good doing it.
If possible, their D looks even better this year without Ndamukong Suh clogging up the middle. They also sport a well-balanced offensive attack that puts up points on the reg with ease.
We'll see how much things toughen up for them once the Big 12 schedule starts hitting them hard. But right now, it's hard to argue there is a better and more complete team in the nation than the Cornhuskers, who also sport one of the best home field advantages in college football.
1. Oregon Ducks
5 of 5
There hasn't been a more impressive team this season. They have the most explosive offense in the nation, averaging almost a point per minute.
Their rushing attack is led by Heisman candidate LaMichael James, who averages over 160 yards per game on the ground and has tasted the end zone 10 times this season. Their defense is very turnover-happy, and they tend to get to the opposing offense late in games.
With a résumé builder under their belt already and a difficult Pac-10 schedule ahead, Chip Kelly's Ducks will need to stay sharp to not lose a game. It's hard to see them losing to anyone right now, though.
If they don't, you'll be seeing them in Glendale, AZ on January 10 fighting for that crystal football.
