MMA Breaking News: This Week's News and Notes, What's to Come in the UFC
"One event down, and two more to go," is probably the best way to describe the situation in our little-yet-large world of Mixed Martial Arts, now that "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons II" is in the books.
We're almost less than 24 hours away from another exciting UFC event in the form of UFC 120, and that's not the only bit of excitement you can expect from the world's premier MMA organization.
From various news desks to your laptop, these are the UFC announcements.
Sherdog reported yesterday that two previously slated fights for the UFC 124 card are now confirmed.
Both Miller brothers will be in action in Montreal, and will be testing their ground skills against solid submission aces in that very city.
In the middleweight division, Dan Miller will look to submit a decorated submission ace in Joe Doerksen, who is coming off a loss to C.B. Dollaway, and undefeated lightweight prospect Charles Oliveira will be facing Dan's younger brother, Mr. "Bad Moon Rising" himself, Jim Miller.
MMA Junkie reported yesterday that also joining those two on the overall card will be a lightweight bout between returning prospect Pat Audinwood and undefeated UFC first-timer John Makdessi.
MMA Junkie also reported Wednesday that undefeated German prospect Pascal Krauss will be facing Mark Scanlon, who will be replacing an injured Kenny Robertson.
Despite the change in opponents, Krauss's fight will still occur at UFC 122 as previously expected.
Finally, MMA Junkie's last reports heading into this weekend—as pertaining to future fight cards—concern a yet-to-be-announced event set for January 22.
The event, which may or may not end up being either another "UFC Fight Night" card or another "UFC Live on Versus" card, already have one lightweight bout and one welterweight bout in the works.
The first MMA Junkie report was of a lightweight showdown between Melvin Guillard and Yves Edwards.
Thirty minutes later, a report had surfaced about Charlie Brenneman facing relative newcomer Amilcar Alves in a welterweight bout.
Could There Be a UFC Title Fight in Future Europe-Bound Events?
That's a question that UFC fans have been asking for the longest time, and yet the only Europe-based event to have been headlined by a title fight was UFC 80 in Newcastle, which saw BJ Penn face Joe Stevenson in one of the UFC's most memorable bouts.
Marshall Zelanzik told MMA Junkie's John Morgan early yesterday afternoon that while there would be a few hurdles in getting high-profile fights on a future UK card, the idea is not entirely out of the question.
While there certainly would be many obstacles in getting a high-profile UFC fight on a UK card, the ratings, attendance records and PPV buy-rates (if the event was on PPV) would shoot through the roof due to the UFC producing a high-level card and promoting a high-level fight that didn't just play to the UK crowd.
Certainly, the validity of fight cards such as the one that will be featured at UFC 120 is an issue that has sparked up much debate recently, but if the UFC can bypass those hurdles somehow and get high-profile fighters on a UK-based UFC event, they won't need to load their UK cards with only UK talent and bill it as a "stacked card" every time.
Perhaps some attitudes will change after UFC 120 this Saturday, but we'll see how things pan out.
Bleacher Report MMA will bring you more on these developing events as they occur for UFC 122, UFC 124 and the January 22nd event, as well as other occurring events in the UFC as they develop, so stay tuned!
