College Football Recruiting 2011: The Top Offense Recruiting Classes

Michael PintoOct 6, 2010

college football recruiting isn't just about bringing in the most talent, it's about bringing in the right talent.

Sometimes a great player just doesn't fit a system. Other times the best of players struggle to do it alone without the proper talent around them.

So when coaches fill up their recruiting classes, it isn't so much about targeting every 5-star prospect out there, it's about bringing in a group of talented players that mesh and compliment each other.

In theory, it's a very simple concept, in reality it's one of the most difficult things to pull off in the game.

We'll be looking at both sides of the ball this week and picking out a few programs that have really done a good job finding that balance on offense and defense.

Here are the best put together 2011 offensive recruiting classes in the country.

5. Washington

1 of 5

Key Offensive Commitments: Kasen Williams (WR), Austin Seferian-Jenkins (TE), Brendon Bigelow (RB)

Washington would have really hit the jackpot if 5-star quarterback Brett Hundley had committed to the Huskies instead of UCLA.

That would have competed the so-called trifecta of 5-star talent along with Kasen Williams and Austin Seferian-Jenkins; the three of them were all ranked in the top five at their position.

Still, even without Hundley on the books, Washington still has Williams and Seferian-Jenkins as well as 4-star running back Brendon Bigelow; one of the most underrated backs in the country.

The Huskies also have a couple of three-star wide receivers with promise and who knows, maybe Hundley will come back around before NSD.

4. Notre Dame

2 of 5

Key Offensive Commitments: Ben Koyack (TE), Justice Hayes (RB), Matt Hegarty (OT), DaVaris Daniels (WR)

Notre Dame has one of the best well-rounded offensive classes in the country and where the Fighting Irish lack in blue-chip talent, they make up in a high quantity of quality prospects.

Tight end Ben Koyack is the only 5-star recruit from Notre Dame's 2011 class, but he's joined by a bunch a 4-star talents who complement each other very well.

There's Justice Hayes at running back, DaVaris Daniels at wide receiver, offensive tackles Matt Hegarty and Jordan Prestwood, and offensive guard Conor Hanratty.

Notre Dame is still in the mix for 5-star running back Savon Huggins, one of the most elusive and electric playmakers in the country.

3. Louisiana State

3 of 5

Key Offensive Commitments: La'el Collins (OT), Jarvis Landry (WR), Kenny Hilliard (RB), Jeremy Hill (RB)

Louisiana State doesn't just have 5-star offensive tackle La'el Collins, one of the top 10 prospects in the country, the Tigers have a couple of explosive gamers.

Wide receiver Jarvis Landry and running back Kenny Hilliard don't test out off the charts and for some reason haven't even garnered 5-star ratings, but when you put the ball in their hands they just make things happen.

Landry has the chance to be the best receiver of the 2011 class and is capable of making some of the most impressive plays you'll ever see at the high school level.

Hilliard doesn't have the top-end speed or the elusiveness of a Savon Huggins, but he's a pure North-South rusher with a relentless motor and a passion for the game you just can't teach.

2. Clemson

4 of 5

Key Offensive Commitments: Mike Bellamy (RB), Charone Peake (WR), Marlin Lane (RB), Eric MacLain (OT/TE)

Clemson doesn't have the quantity that Notre Dame has, but the Tigers have three of the best offensive recruits in the country, players that just look perfect for their system.

It begins and ends with Mike Bellamy, Clemson's 5-star running back who runs a 4.3-second 40-yard dash and can hit a home run from anywhere on the field.

He's one of the best running backs in the nation, but he's not even the only top 10 back in Clemson's 2011 class; that would be Marlin Lane.

Add in 5-star receiver Charone Peake and 4-star athlete Eric MacLain, rated as a high-end 4-star prospect at both offensive tackle and tight end.

1. Texas

5 of 5

Key Offensive Commitments: Malcolm Brown (RB), Christian Westerman (OG), Garrett Greenlea (OT), Jaxon Shipley (WR)

It should come as no surprise that Texas ranks out as the top offensive recruiting class when the Longhorns have far and away the best overall class in the country.

Focusing on just the offensive side of the ball, there's running back Malcolm Brown and offensive guard Christian Westerman, both of whom are the top prospect at their respective positions.

Add in 5-star offensive tackle Garrett Greenlea, 4-star receiver Jaxon Shipley and 4-star offensive guard Sedric Flowers, all top 10 at their positions, and the Longhorns easily  take the cake.
