Patrick Chung: Who Was That Guy on Monday Night Football?

Dustin TurnerOct 5, 2010

Did you watch Monday Night Football this week? Well,

those of you who tuned in to watch another epic showdown on Monday Night Football between the New England Patriots and their hated rivals, the Miami Dolphins, were probably taken aback by the stellar play of a young safety out of Oregon.

Out of nowhere comes this second year player blocking kicks and flying to the ball. Most of you were probably wondering just who this No. 25 special teams All-Star was.

That would be 2008 second round pick Patrick Chung, or as Oregon Duck fans know him, Patrick "I never met a tackle I didn't like" Chung.

Success for the man who formerly played the all-important rover position in Nick Aliotti's defense comes as no surprise to those who saw him tear through Pac-10 teams at Oregon, but how he came about that success is a bit surprising.

An Oregon Duck fan favorite, Chung rarely seemed interested in where the ball was. Patrick is first and foremost a hitter. The bigger the hit, the louder the "pop", that makes Patrick all the more satisfied. It would sometimes cost him—on some balls that seemed like they could have been easily intercepted, Patrick would go for the hit 95 percent of the time.

But, that's what made him so fun to watch; he was always about the hit. All this shows in what T.J. Ward, the man who followed Chung, has now become (check out his hit on Jordan Shipley).

Chung was born in Kingston, Jamaica and is of Chinese-Jamaican descent. He attended Rancho Cucamonga High School in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and enrolled at Oregon when he was just 16 years old.

After a redshirt year, Chung fit into the Duck defense like a glove as he finished second on the team with 91 tackles and made the honorable mention All Pac-10 team. He was first team All Pac-10 in his last two seasons and has a highlight reel's footage worth of big plays and bone-crunching hits.

All those in Eugene are thrilled that one of theirs is getting this much national attention, in addition to the Ducks being the third ranked team in the nation. No matter how high his star climbs, I don't see Patrick ever forgetting his years and teammates in Eugene.

He was one of those players that you could tell was made to be a Duck, and that will never change.
