New NBA Free-Throw Rule Explained

LeBron James Leads Balanced Attack As "Redeem Team" Punishes Spain By 37

Bleacher ReportAug 16, 2008

You can leave the ridiculous theatrics and sideshows to the Spanish team. The Americans have a gold medal to win.

LeBron James led all scorers, including eight Americans in double-figures, with 18 points on five-for-10 shooting. James continued to put on a worldwide exhibition as to why he is the best all-around player on this planet by adding eight assists, four steals, and five boards while going two-for-five from downtown and six-for-six from the stripe in the Americans' 119-82 beatdown of overwhelmed and "defending world champion" Spain.

The U.S. was forced to go to a three-guard lineup with Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, and Jason Kidd after Carmelo Anthony ran into foul trouble. But that was no problem for the "Melo Man," as Anthony came back off the bench to post 16 points and shoot four-for-six from 3-point range while Dwyane Wade also came off the bench to score 16 and rip seven boards.

The Americans were beat on the boards, 39-37, but that was an afterthought after their shooting display that included going 12-for-25 (48 percent) from beyond the arc. It was an incredible performance for a team whose outside shooting had been questioned coming into the tournament, and it was particularly impressive considering that sharpshooter Michael Redd didn't even hit a single trey in the contest.

Chris Bosh has continued to prove that he may be the Redeem Team's best rebounder by leading the team with eight boards. Bosh has been consistent on the boards throughout the tournament and has played an integral role off the bench for this group.

This completed a clean sweep of Group B by an average of 27.5 points - a number that could have been far larger if the team hadn't decided to cruise their way to a 19-point win over Angola, which was the closest contest. The group also seemed to take their foot off the gas in the opening around against China in a 31-point demolition.

The eight-team medal round starts on Wednesday in Beijing and will have the U.S. facing the fourth-place finisher from Group A.
