2008 Heisman Hopefuls
My top Heisman Hopefuls for next season (next year class status):
The Big 12 will be deep with Heisman talent next season, which will divide voters and open up the chances for the other candidates.
Todd Reesing, QB, Kansas (Jr.): A dark horse candidate for this season's Heisman—but convincing victories over Mizzou and Oklahoma next season could get him the top five invite to NYC. Kansas will not be under the radar as the Big 12 got a good look this year at Mangino’s system, which will be even more impressive if Reesing has a season comparable to this one.
Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia (So.): Having a huge season as a freshman will get Moreno some hype going into next season—however continuing it against the stout SEC defenses week in and week out will jump him up the Heisman ranks. Knowshon already has great vision for a freshman, and breakaway speed that is unmatched by any running back in his conference. He will have trouble stealing votes from Tebow, but in this conference anything can happen.
Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech (So.): With phenomenal stats this season, only injury will keep him off the list next year. His size and hands make him the perfect weapon for Texas Tech's pass hungry offense. Having him competing against the other Big 12 Heisman candidates will hurt Crabtree's chances of winning it, but the lack of national exposure will do the most damage. Tech rarely gets on national TV, hurting Crabtree’s ability to showcase his talents.
Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma (So.): Oklahoma will once again be favored to win the Big 12. Bradford’s ability to manage the offense make him a likely contender. As a freshman, his stats have been amazing. His national exposure week in and week out will make him a front runner. He will be the main vote recipient in the Big—however with the talent in this division, it’ll be hard for him to consolidate the conferences voters' attention on him.
Tim Tebow, QB, Florida (Jr.): Should be the favorite next season to win it all. The Gators should be a top three team to start the year, and if Tebow keeps them there he will probably take home the trophy again. Urban Myer has to find a running game to keep Tebow healthy, which will take away from his running stats. Tebow has set the bar very high for himself and anything less than what he did this year will probably not be enough to win it again. That said, he’s very capable of going above and beyond this season's stats.
Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State (Jr.): The main weapon of the Buckeyes' offense will be in full use next season to continue Ohio State's hunt for a National Championship. Preseason polls have been rumored to have the Buckeyes anywhere between No.1 and No. 5. With the national spotlight once again on Ohio State and with a game against USC, Wells will have plenty of time to impress voters.
If they don’t jump to the pros: Chase Daniel (Sr.), Pat White (Sr.), Darren McFadden (Sr.)
