Michael Vick and Philadelphia Eagles Flatten Jaguars in Rout To Lead NFC East

Dan PennwynSep 26, 2010

In a brilliant performance by both QB Michael Vick and the coaching staff with their playcalling, the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the Jacksonville Jaguars in 100 plus degree weather.

Vick looked down right remarkable yesterday as he completed 17 of 31 passes for 291 yards and four TDs (three passing, one rushing), and is clearly making head coach Andy Reid look like a genius for making the controversial call to name him the starter.

After a preseason filled with disaster, Vick appears to be back on track after completing his third game today without any turnovers. He’s put up 83 points early in the season, giving the Eagles an average of 27.6 points per game.

He has focused on becoming a pocket passer first before a runner, and his hard work is becoming very obvious. Vick also proved yet again that he can still run as he broke off a 17-yard rush that he took into the end zone for six points.

However, Vick can’t do it all by himself and he got plenty of help from the young guns who surround him.

WR DeSean Jackson notched five receptions for 153 yards and one TD. On 3rd-and-16, QB Michael Vick threw a beautiful pass to the sideline and found Jackson, who made one guy miss before turning on the burners for a 61-yard TD pass. That play is DeSean’s ninth TD reception that was 50 yards or more.

Second-year WR Jeremy Maclin was also sure to mark his territory as he went on to post his second career multi-TD game. On four catches, Maclin recorded 83 yards and two TDs. He wasn't close to Jackson's numbers, but he should receive just as much recognition.

The Birds were traditional in their approach, throwing the ball 31 times vs. running 21 times, which includes Vick’s four runs and Jackson’s one trick play.

On defense, Sean McDermott has the Eagles look dominating and the front four is coming into their own, especially Trevor Laws and the DT position. They applied a ton of pressure on QB David Garrard, sacking him a total of six times.

LB Stewart Bradley was a welcomed re-addition after he sustained his concussion in the first game of the season, as he and the D held the Jaguars to just three points and under 200 yards of total offense.

In fact, the Eagles handed the Jags multiple 3rd-and-long situations!

There is a rotation along the defensive line here in Philly, and it is already paying dividends. Keeping the players fresh will allow them to be faster than the opposing line, which will result in getting to the QB on a more consistent basis. If this can happen, it allows for the LBs to play more in coverage, hopefully ending the fit that TEs give them.

Someone who stepped up huge today at DT is Trevor Laws, who hasn’t been very productive since being drafted in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Laws is looking to rebound to help solve some of the lack of production from the defensive tackle position and become a force to have a successful career.

CB Asante Samuel gave the Eagles their only interception today, but the defense was ballhawking all day long, knocking down many passes thrown by Jaguars QB David Garrard.

All in all, it was a beautifully dominating performance today which gave the Eagles their second win, making them 2-1 and sitting at the top of the NFC East, leading each of the three other teams by just one win!
