NFL Fantasy Football Week 3: Waiver Wire Pick Ups You Can Hold On To

Nick DSep 24, 2010

Everyone loves Mike Tolbert this week because Ryan Mathews is inactive for Week 3. But that isn't going to last.  Ryan Mathews will get healthy and return to his starting role. I'd rather pick someone who will stay on my roster throughout the season.

Here are a few guys who fit that bill:

Mark Clayton, WR (StL)

He's been consistent in the first two weeks and I see him continuing to produce throughout the season.  The Rams will be passing a lot late in games and Clayton has appeared to be Sam Bradford's favorite target.  He isn't reliable as a WR2 just yet, but consider him a good WR3, Flex, or bye-week sub for the rest of the season.

Michael Vick, QB (Phi)

Vick is playing for a new contract.  This means he'll be playing balls-to-the-wall to show that he still has the ability to take a team to the playoffs.  His arm might not bring him tons of points, but his legs will more than make up for it.

The way the change from Kolb to Vick went down, it would appear the Eagles plan to ride Vick through the season and would only pull him if the Eagles were eliminated from the playoffs.

Fred Taylor, RB (NE)

With Kevin Faulk on IR, the Patriots need a veteran back to check down to on passing downs.  Fred Taylor is a much better option than Sammy Morris and BenJarvis Green-Ellis.  Aaron Hernandez broke out against the Jets, because they went to some empty backfield sets.  They won't abandon the single back sets all season and Taylor should be the back filling in for Faulk.

Chiefs, D/ST

With the addition of Eric Berry in the draft, the Chiefs went from a terrible defense to a very good one.  Berry attacks the run very well at 10 to 12 yards from the line of scrimmage. This allows the Chiefs to give a seven in the box look, while still defending the run like they have eight in the box.

Dexter McCluster returning kicks is also an added benefit.

Peyton Hillis, RB (Cle)

In deep PPR leagues, Hillis has scored 13 points in back-to-back weeks.  Eric Mangini seems to be committed to using Hillis as a short yardage receiver and a goal line back.

He won't score a touchdown every week, but he should consistently get seven or more points and will be a threat to steal carries from Jerome Harrison all season long.  He is a reach, but if Harrison gets hurt, then Hillis becomes four times as valuable.
