Waiver Wire Advice: Players To Consider Dropping From Your Fantasy Football Team

Bruno Boys Fantasy FootballSep 20, 2010

Now that a couple of weeks are done, we are starting to see some trends emerge and that includes players who just aren’t making the cut.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard threw three touchdowns in Week 1, but had four interceptions in Week 2 and was benched during the game in favor of Luke McCown.

Seattle Seahawks receiver Mike Williams was a big sleeper candidate after a quality preseason; however, he has just four catches through two games.

In Detroit, Lions receiver Nate Burleson caught just one pass for four yards before an ankle injury took him out of the game last week.

Even two weeks into the season, there are already a lot of difficult decisions you have to make as a fantasy football owner. That’s why Bruno Boys will be with you all season long giving you advice on who to keep, as well as the players you might want to start thinking about letting go.

The first few weeks of the NFL season is never a good time to jump the gun on cutting players. Your assessment, as good as it may be, is based on only one or two weeks of performance.

A lot can change in the first few weeks.

That’s why we suggest you monitor these players closely and keep your finger poised over the big red drop button.

QUARTERBACKS—CUT THEM LOOSE

Vince Young (Tennessee Titans)

Garrard wasn’t the only quarterback that was benched in Week 2. In a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Titans quarterback Vince Young was benched at the start of the fourth quarter, following two interceptions and a lost fumble.

His backup, Kerry Collins, threw an interception on his first series but almost led the Titans to a come from behind victory.

After the game, Tennessee head coach Jeff Fischer said that they needed a change of pace at the position and that Young was his starting quarterback in Week 3.

However, even with Young returning there is not much of a reason to keep him on your roster. When he plays, he does not attempt many passes (27 passes in two games) because the Titans are a run first team behind the explosive legs of Chris Johnson.

Young may be good for the occasional 200-225 passing yards and two touchdown performance, but he’s also likely to have days like the one he did against Pittsburgh (66 passing yards, three turnovers).

Instead of trying to predict which game Young will produce, consider using the roster spot on depth at another position.

RUNNING BACKS—CUT THEM LOOSE

Brandon Jacobs (New York Giants)

New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs is not doing himself any favors this season. In two games, he’s rushed just 12 times for 44 yards with no touchdowns.

In a Week 1 victory over the Carolina Panthers, the Giants inserted Jacobs in at the goal line for a cheap short yardage touchdown; however, he was stuffed and two plays later, starting running back Ahmad Bradshaw scored the touchdown.

If Jacobs can’t even make the most of his supposed specialty as a short yardage running back then what’s the point of keeping him on your fantasy football roster?

If that wasn’t enough, he’s also throwing temper tantrums like a little child and that’s a good way to get in the doghouse of an old-school coach such as Tom Coughlin.

In a Week 2 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Jacobs was upset over getting benched and he threw his helmet, which ricocheted off the ground and landed nine rows into the stands.

At the same time as Jacobs is flailing away, Bradshaw is running well and his 37 carries through two games are a true indicator that he is the No. 1 running back in New York.

It’s clearly evident that Jacobs’ role in the offense is minimal and that he has worn out his welcome in New York.

Another bad week from the once “franchise” running back and it’s time to cut bait.
