Pitt Player Arrested; Temple Beats UConn: Can It Get Worse For the Big East?
What has the Big East done to deserve this bad luck?
Today, Temple, the team booted from the Big East the year after Connecticut upgraded to FBS status, broke open a close game by scoring 16 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat UConn 31-16.
Ah, the Owls must be savoring the sweet revenge and bitter irony of their win.
And as if that weren't enough, more bad news came across the ticker:
Pitt reserve offensive lineman Keith Coleman was arrested around 2 am in Pittsburgh. Apparently he upset the male companions of two women he was trying to talk to. Allegedly, one of the men used a racial slur and Coleman broke his collar bone. This is a developing story and the facts will change as more is known.
Pitt fans will know much more about the tenor of the 2010 Panthers once Miami and PItt take the field Thursday evening.
The conference is experiencing a perfect storm of bad luck brought about by poor performances on the field, poor judgement by players off the field, and perhaps poor early season scheduling that has sent the Big East on the road against tough opponents too often.
The best news of the day so far is West Virginia's 31-17 domination of Maryland.
If Pitt can move to 2-1 by defeating Miami there's the promise the Backyard Brawlers, Pitt and West Virginia, will save face for the league.
Regardless of the outcome Thursday night, coach Wannstedt better have a serious coming-to-Jesus meeting with his squad.
Wannstedt will not fall out of favor with Chancellor Nordenberg for losing nearly as quickly as he will if Pitt players end up in the Pittsburgh jail in the early morning hours.
