Heavyweight Title Fight: The Pointless Encounter Between Haye and Harrison

Alex TustainSep 16, 2010

The upcoming fight between David Haye and Audley Harrison has been billed by some as the first real test of David Haye's crown. However, in reality, this is vein attempt by a promotion company to build up a fight between an exciting fighter who seems slightly reluctant to fight a certain set of brothers and former darling of British sport whos career never really took off.

The exciting fighter there is of course David Haye whose athleticism and raw talent has never been in question nor however has it ever really been tested. The title fight between him and the man mountain Valuev was an interesting spectacle to watch and David Haye played the game superbly but the big Russian was never known for his technique preferring to be famous for brute force and sheer difficulty to beat.

Fighting people like Valuev and Ruiz (the first defence of his crown) are certainly steps that Haye had to take and the ease in which he disposed of these is testament to the talent that the Brit possesses.

Often discredited in the sport for his loud mouth and offensive demeanour, Haye has shot to fame with the high profile victory over Valuev and the successful demolition of Ruiz however this has left many screaming for a fight between Haye and a Klitschko. There have been rumours flying around about contract negotiations falling flat and gentlemen’s agreements between ignored but in truth, whatever is going on behind the scenes there is surely one side that is pulling against this fight.

It is likely that it will be Wladimir Klitschko that Haye will come up against should the fight happen and he has a marked difference in the way he handles himself outside of the ring. The quiet and well spoken fighter does no more than to call Haye out of his hiding place and ask why this fight has not already taken place. Haye on the other hand has bombarded any media outlet that will listen with excuses on why it has not already happened.

There are no doubts that this will happen eventually, it is just on whose terms it will fall under.

And so we turn to Haye's next opponent, the lumbering comedy character of Audley Harrison. After his stunning win at the 2000 Olympics to claim the super heavyweight gold medal, Harrison was left under the radar for a number of years after a series of unlucky breaks forced him to America to work the circuit stateside.

He was long over due for a return to ring in the U.K. unfortunately this did not come under the best of circumstances as he returned to England to fight Danny Wallace for the Commonwealth title only to lose on a points decision. He spent the net few years in the wilderness with rumours of fights being cancelled and a car crash involving him and his manager forcing him to pull out of a high profile fight with Paul King.

He has since regained some of his reputation by winning the Prize-Fighter tournament and beating Michael Sprott, a well respected fighter.

Harrison's journey to the fight has been incredible but unfortunately it is difficult to see past the faster and stronger boxer for this one. The most interesting nature of this slightly farcical fight is the way it is being promoted by the two fighters.

There have been a number of television appearances in which the fighters have appeared to be shouting the odds at each other and giving each other a verbal dressing down, this may not sound strange in the new world of verbal boxing but what is strange is that the boxers have been appearing on the same shows at the same time. This is unusual and a cynical viewer may see this as a vein attempt to drum up interest in a fight that is effectively a full gone conclusion by setting up live battles of wit and the trading of insults to create a rivalry that just isn’t really there.

Of course it will be up to Mr Harrison to prove me wrong on this and the fight will certainly be interesting when it takes place in November but as it stands at the moment, the safety tactic adopted by Haye means that a Klitschko fight may be some way off.
