College Football Heisman Rankings: Michigan's Denard Robinson Tops the List
We’re just two weekends into the college football season, but already there’s Heisman Trophy talk starting to pop up all over the place.
It’s no surprise as we’ve seen a few amazing individual efforts out of some of the best players in the game so far this year.
There's been a few key guys who have really stuck out as being the cream of the crop early on in the 2010 season.
Let's look at the 10 players who would be leading the Heisman voting if it were held today.
1. Denard Robinson: QB, Michigan
1 of 10
Robinson has won back-to-back Walter Camp Player of the Week awards for his sensational performances in Michigan’s first two games.
After toasting a solid UConn defense for over 350 total yards (186 passing, 197 rushing) in the Wolverines season opener, the 6‘0", 190-pound sophomore followed it up with one of the greatest single-game performances in college football history.
Robinson totaled over 500 yards (244 passing, 258 rushing) and scored three TDs in Michigan’s last second 28-24 victory at Notre Dame yesterday.
After three years of waiting, Rich Rodriguez has finally found his playmaker at Michigan.
2. Terrelle Pryor: QB, Ohio State
2 of 10
After a solid outing in Ohio State’s opener against Marshall, Pryor showed he could lead his team to victory against quality competition when the Buckeyes ran past the Miami Hurricanes to a 36-24 victory yesterday in Columbus.
Terrelle’s accuracy was questionable (just 12 of 27 on pass attempts), but he made the big plays through the air and on the ground when his team needed him the most.
As long as Ohio State keeps winning, Terrelle’s name will remain near the top of the Heisman list.
3. Kellen Moore: QB, Boise State
3 of 10
Moore’s late fourth quarter touchdown drive to beat Virginia Tech may be one of the most impressive things we see all season, but the Hokies' loss at home to James Madison yesterday could diminish how people perceive the big victory now.
The 6‘0", 185-pound junior was 23 of 38 with 215 yards and three TDs in the Monday night matchup.
Moore has intangibles that could compare with any other quarterback in college football, but we’ll have to wait and see how much Heisman voters factor in Boise’s weak WAC schedule.
4. LaMichael James: RB, Oregon
4 of 10
James stepped in after a one-game suspension to provide a big outing in Oregon’s road trip down to Knoxville.
The 5‘9" blazer, who rushed for over 1,500 yards as a freshman in 2009, started off his season with a bang by lighting up the Tennessee defense for 134 rushing yards and a 72-yard touchdown run last night.
James could be the most exciting back we have in college football this season.
5. Landry Jones: QB, Oklahoma
5 of 10
Jones proved he was more than just your typical Oklahoma quarterback who sits back and collects a bunch of wins on a talented team.
After an up-and-down performance in the opening game against Utah State, the 6‘4" sophomore rebounded in a big way yesterday against Florida State.
Jones showed he was a difference maker as he shredded the Seminoles defense, completing 30 of 40 throws for 380 yards and four TDs.
Jones has a great stage to showcase his skills when Oklahoma battles Texas on Oct. 2.
6. Daniel Thomas: RB, Kansas State
6 of 10
Thomas proved that his 234-yard breakout game in an opening win against UCLA was no fluke, as he ran through a lackluster Missouri State defense for 137 yards and two TDs yesterday.
Playing for a mediocre Kansas State squad could hurt his Heisman value, but there’s no doubt that this 6‘2", 225-pound senior is something special when he has the ball in his hands.
7. Andrew Luck: QB, Stanford
7 of 10
Luck came into the 2010 season with both high expectations as well as a few question marks.
Many thought he possessed first-round tools, but they still wanted to see if he could handle leading the offense without departed running back Toby Gerhart.
The 6‘4", 235-pound redshirt sophomore has been stellar so far, throwing for over 450 yards and six TDs in Stanford’s two early season blowout victories.
If he keeps playing at this pace, Luck will not only have Heisman buzz surrounding his name, he’ll have No. 1 draft pick hype also.
8. Adam Robinson: RB, Iowa
8 of 10
Robinson has been a workhorse for the Top 10-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes in their first two contests.
The 5‘9", 200-pound sophomore has carried the ball 38 times and rushed for 265 yards and four TDs in Iowa’s first two victories.
If the Hawkeyes can keep on winning, it should give Robinson a nice platform to make a name for himself outside of Big Ten country.
9. Cam Newton: QB, Auburn
9 of 10
Newton entered the season as one of the most intriguing players in the country.
The former Florida Gator who transferred from the JUCO ranks this year possesses unbelievable athleticism for his 6‘6", 250-pound frame.
The junior has proved he is the perfect fit for Gus Malzahn’s offensive system as he’s totaled over 550 yards as a dual-threat weapon in Auburn's first two wins.
If Newton can lead Auburn into contention with Alabama for an SEC West crown, he’ll surely see his Heisman stock skyrocket.
10. Trent Richardson: RB, Alabama
10 of 10
Richardson has already shown he can fill the shoes of last year’s Heisman winner, Mark Ingram.
The 5‘11", 220-pound sophomore sensation has stepped up to carry the load by rushing for 210 yards and three TDs in Alabama’s first two games.
Richardson’s 144 yard rushing performance in a 24-3 win over Penn State yesterday proves that he has what it takes to handle the big game spotlight without Ingram.
