Shane Mosley Squares Off With Sergio Mora, September 18th at Staples Center
Former WBA welterweight champion, Shane Mosley is facing Mexican-American boxer Sergio Mora, a former junior middleweight champion, on September 18th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
Mosley lost to undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. last May 1st, in Las Vegas via a unanimous decision
During the fight, Mosley stunned Mayweather with two power punches that nearly knocked the undefeated boxer down. But Mayweather managed to beat the bell by holding on to Mosley as he struggled to survive the controversial second round.
Mayweather recovered in the third round and dominated the fight on points until the last round.
Boxing fans who watched the fight on video were of the opinion that the fight may have been fixed: Mosley was clearly in the position to finish Mayweather in the middle of the second round, but surprisingly, he slowed down instead of accelerating on his attack.
Mosley, who has won titles in three different divisions, is a partner of Oscar de la Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), who is promoting the event.
About 10 years ago, Mosley fought the legendary Oscar de la Hoya in a 12-round WBA welterweight championship fight. Mosley emerged as the winner in a split decision by the judges, earning $15 million while Oscar de la Hoya walked away with his guaranteed $35 million.
Later, Mosley was accused of using illegal performance enhancing drugs prior to his fight with de la Hoya. He confessed and subsequently admitted having used the banned drug EPO in preparation for his bout with de la Hoya.
Mosley's previous major defeats were against Vernon Forrest in 2002, and Winky Wright in 2004. He also lost to Miguel Cotto in 2007 via a unanimous decision.
Mosley and Mora are both under contract with GBP.
At 38 years old and standing 5'9", with a reach of 74 inches, Mosely is currently rated the No. five pound-for-pound boxer in the world by the prestigious Ring Magazine.
In 2008, Sergio Mora defeated Vernon Forrest via a 12-round majority decision to become the WBC super welterweight champion. It may be recalled that Mosley lost to Forrest twice in 2002, which means that Mora has a good chance of beating Mosley.
Mora has fought equally capable boxers earlier in his professional career including Peter Manfredo and Jarmain Taylor.
Fresh from his TKO victory over Calvin Green last April at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, Mora is 29 years old, stands at 6'0" with a reach of 74 inches.
