Fantasy Football Leagues-Understanding the Differences
I hope this will be able to help in finding the right type of fantasy football league that might be best for you. Good luck in 2010 and have a fun and thrilling fantasy football season.
You might think that because you are competing against less teams, it may be easier to win in a smaller league. When it comes to fantasy football, however, this isn’t always the case for a number of reasons.
Six Team Leagues

Most Likely Post-June 1 Trade Candidates 👋
You have to remember that the smaller the size of the league, the more complicated it will be to dominate your league. The simple reason is because of the amount of players drafted. In a six-team league, there is only 96 players being drafted based on a 16 player roster. This means every roster will be full of top 100 players, meaning every team is going to be about equal. This also means the free agent pool is going to be full of players that will be able to be easily added to a roster once the season unfolds. Any truly competitive player would not want to play in a league like this, because it’s a league where lucky being better than good is more likely than playing in a more competitive league. This type of league should be restricted to people learning the game or just looking to have fun.
Eight Team Leagues
Eight team leagues are a little more competitive because you are now drafting 128 players, but this still leads to many teams being equal and a limited chance to win. This is still more of a fun kind of league rather than truly competitive, and is one I wouldn’t suggest getting involved in if you are a serious competitor. You may have one or two teams that will be out of contention, but overall, even if you don’t know what you are doing, it won’t be hard to field a team that will be fighting for a playoff spot.
Ten Team Leagues
Ten team leagues are probably the most popular type of fantasy football league, likely due to the competitive nature and the ability to still have a good team. With the player pool reaching 160 players, free agents will be less limited and building a good team may take a little knowledge. It still isn’t to the point where you can’t be lucky rather than good, but it’s a lot harder than a six or eight team league.
Twelve Team Leagues
Now your up to 192 players, and it is likely you will need to know your fantasy football if you are going to have a competitive team, especially if you are in an early or late draft position and have to wait a long time in between picks. Twelve team leagues usually result in a limited number of good teams, maybe three or four, so if you love competition and want to prove your worth, you may want to sign up for a twelve team league.
While 10 and 12 team leagues are my favorite, I wouldn’t participate in a league that included any more than 12 teams, no matter how good you think you are. Here’s why:
In twelve and 10 team leagues, you can have a shot at building a good team no matter what your draft position is. It may be harder at the front or back end at times, but it can be done. Once it goes over 12 teams, the players get saturated more quickly and your likelihood of building a good team will be more determined by your draft position than it will by your actual fantasy knowledge. That is why I avoid any big leagues, because it just doesn’t seem fair that your fate will actually be decided on what draft position you are in, so be warned if you are participating in one of these larger drafts.
