10 Reasons To Be Excited For The Ultimate Fighter Season 12

Mike HodgesAug 31, 2010

Within the next couple weeks, UFC fans will be tuning in into another season of hit reality show The Ultimate Fighter. This season will feature 28 aspiring lightweights competing for a contract in UFC.

The show will also feature UFC Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and Welterweight contender Josh Koscheck as opposing coaches, and both men will square off following the conclusion of this season for UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 124.

In past seasons of TUF, we have witnessed all sorts of things that keep us interested and watching every week. Whether it's drama between teammates, injuries or a heated confrontation between the opposing coaches, this season will be no different and it will certainly keep us entertained for the hour that it is on television.

Here are the 10 Reasons To Be Excited For The Ultimate Fighter 12.

10. New Cast, New Coaches

1 of 10

Oh, what a difference a year can make.

Following last year's pointless, but entertaining season of TUF featuring Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz/ Rich Franklin, fans will now be introduced to new fighters and new coaches.

Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck will be featured as opposing coaches this year and will coach a new cast complied of 28 lightweights to battle for Octagon supremacy.

It's been evident in the past that each and every fighter who is invited onto the reality show will present a certain quality about themselves which ultimately makes them become fan favourites.

Not to mention some casts have provided some memorable moments. So, this cast should be no exception.

9. Expect Drama Inside The House

2 of 10

How interesting would TUF be to UFC fans if there wasn't any drama inside the house or drama between teammates?

Well, it'd kind of be hard to follow without it. Every season always sees some sort of altercation that keeps fans glued to their TV's and expect fireworks.

Who could forget Junie Browning?

The hot tempered Lightweight constantly threw tantrums and caused problems with everybody in the house. UFC President Dana White has made a few appearances, too. He would warn fighters and threaten to cut them from the tournament, regardless of how successful they were at the time. The boss definitely enforced the rules.

Who knows what to expect from the cast mates this year, perhaps White might make another appearance to straighten people out.

Regardless, this season should provide for some entertaining television.

8. A TUF Winner Will Have A Successful Career

3 of 10

It seems like only yesterday where UFC fans witnessed both Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar offered UFC contracts for their incredible fight at TUF Finale in April 2005.

As the years went on fans saw unknown fighters turn into UFC stars, and from there those UFC stars would have successful careers. Fighters such as Forrest Griffin, Rashad Evans and Gray Maynard have either gone on to hold a UFC title or competed for a UFC title shot.

It will be no different for each fighter this season, as they will all compete for a chance to recieve contract from UFC. Perhaps we might see another potential UFC star in the making.

7. Fighters Will Learn And Train With Greg Jackson

4 of 10

Whichever fighter ends up on Team St-Pierre, they will have the oppurtunity of training with and learning from arguably the best strategist in MMA today.

Greg Jackson works and trains some of the most elite fighters in MMA today, including Georges St-Pierre, Nate Marquardt, Rashad Evans and Jon Jones.

It's pretty obvious Jackson is apart of Team St-Pierre, not only has he played a big role in the French-Canadian's success thus far in UFC but St-Pierre is the most successful fighter out of Greg Jackson's camp. Now, while he isn't actually listed with Team St-Pierre itself, it's likely he will make an appearance in an episode or two.

Very few fighters will have the opportunity to experience achieving success from training with Jackson, those who are paired up with him will surely take advantage of the opportunity.

6. Injuries Will Happen

5 of 10

There will be a common ocurrence of injuries to fighters that will force them out of the competition. Obviously there are injuries much more severe than this one in the picture, but this can be the type of injury that will ultimately end a fighter's chances of competing.

It's been shown in past seasons where certain fighters have had to pull out of the reality show because of an injury or a medical condition.

It's not something every fan wants to look forward to, or be excited for, but it is something they will have to expect.

5. Josh Koscheck Will Trash-Talk

6 of 10

Opposing coach and welterweight contender, Josh Koscheck will undoubtedly be a thorn in the side of the UFC Welterweight champion. Koscheck has already started to get under the skin of St-Pierre, bashing his home land of Canada at UFC 114 and posting messages on his Twitter account.

Both men have some history together, St-Pierre dominated the former NCAA All-American wrestler, following his title loss to Matt Serra, at UFC 74.

The reason why this is exciting is because Kosheck's verbal abuse towards St-Pierre will generate ratings. Fans will tune in each week to see Koscheck jabber at the champ, while at the same time coaching a team of lightweights, in order to gain a physiological edge ahead of his title match later this year.

We've all seen altercations between coaches in previous seasons, but it's more than likely Koscheck will be doing all the talking as St-Pierre will save his breath and talk with his fists once the two coaches finally meet.

4. A Memorable Fight

7 of 10

Throughout the past tweleve seasons, there is always the one knockout blow, submission or competitive fight that fans never forget about.

On this season of The Ultimate Fighter, there should be plenty of action that will entertain UFC fans. Especially considering the Lightweight division is one of the most exciting divisions to watch in UFC and it's possible fans could treated to an entertaining season full of memorable fights.

Internet forums and MMA communities will begin debating on which fight is thier favourite once the new season is under way.

3. Coaching Debut of Georges St-Pierre

8 of 10

Everyone knows what UFC Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is capable of inside the Octagon, but it will be curious to see what he is capable of outside of it.

St-Pierre will be one of the new coaches on the upcoming season of TUF, and he is fully prepared to take on the job, as he has brought friend and trainer Firas Zahabi and Muay Thai trainer Phil Nurse along with him.

Assuming Greg Jackson makes an appearance, it will be interesting to see how St-Pierre handles the responsibility of coaching a team of aspiring fighters, teaching them different techniques, incorporating different training methods, and last but not least, dealing with the trash-talking from opposing coach Josh Koscheck.

Along with handling the responisibity as a coach, the role will show St-Pierre from a different perspective. He is not just a mixed martial artist but a teacher with a vast knowledge of MMA, who's techniques and style are easibly coachable and not complex.

2. Ultimate Finale

9 of 10

Once the competition is over, it will finally be time to determine the next Ultimate Fighter as the final four will meet to battle for two UFC contracts.

Over the years there have been memorable battles between future UFC stars, perhaps the most memorable is Forrest Griffin versus Stephan Bonnar.

The two men squared off in what many fans and critics hail as the greatest fight of all-time and who would disagree?

Not only did both competitors put on a show that went to the final bell, but they both recieved contracts and more importantly, they finally brought mainstream attention to MMA.

The Ultimate Finale will not only crown a new winner but perhaps establish an aspiring fighter as a household name in the future, like it has done to other countless fighters before.

1. Georges St-Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck

10 of 10

It's been a tradition for both coaches to square off at the conclusion of each season, and although it hasn't produced some of the greatest fights recently, the anticipated rematch between Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck will finally take place.

After a season that is full of preparation and trash-talking, mostly done by Koscheck, the two combatants will square off for St-Pierre's Welterweight title at UFC 124. In fact, it was recently announced that the match up will take place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The last time these two men met, St-Pierre easily walked away with the victory after using his superior wrestling skills to tire out and simply dominate his opponent. Now, fast forward four years later and both competitors have taken different paths to get to where they're at today.

Koscheck has become a much more well-rounded fighter since his loss to St-Pierre, while the French-Canadian has rounded off six consecutive victories since reclaiming his title in 2007, and is arguably considered the best pound-for pound fighter in the world.

Unlike some lackluster performances from past coaches, this bout will not disapoint as both men are in the prime of thier careers and it will determine the better, more evolved fighter since thier previous meeting at UFC 74.

If the anticipation for the new season of The Ultimate Fighter is any indication, the main event between St-Pierre and Koshcheck is worth the wait.
