Buffalo Bills: C.J. Spiller's Preseason Play Will Reignite Old Questions

Daniel WolfAug 29, 2010

Buffalo Bills rookie first round running back C.J. Spiller is everything he was advertised to be coming into the NFL out of Clemson so far in the 2010 NFL preseason.

After seeing limited snaps in the preseason opener loss to the Washington Redskins, Spiller has come into his own in the second and third preseason games, and has shown why he was highly-touted and worth the high first-round draft pick too.

Against the Redskins Spiller did not catch any passes, had four carries for 16 yards, and returned one punt for zero yards.

In the Bills' second-game victory over the Indianapolis Colts, Spiller had 10 carries for 54 yards with one touchdown and caught one pass for two yards.

Then in the Bills' third preseason game in a victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, Spiller once again exploded for 12 more carries for 52 yards with two touchdowns, and he caught two passes for 33 yards.

If you total all that up, then Spiller has 26 carries for 122 yards (4.69 average per carry) and three touchdowns. He also has caught three passes for 35 yards.

Solid numbers for the rookie, but what about the other running backs on the depth chart?

The Bills already had Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson on the roster prior to drafting Spiller, so many across the NFL thought that the Bills would trade away Lynch due to his questionable off-the-field problems and decisions, but they have not done that yet.

Is there a chance for a trade?

Of course there is because he can get the Bills more value over Jackson in a trade and there is bound to be a trade partner sooner than later if a team's starting running back goes down early in the season.

But as of right now, the Bills are stacked at the position, and even if they go through the entire season with all three on board that is nothing but a good thing because you can never have enough running backs on an NFL roster due to the violent nature of both the game and position.

Spiller has by far solidified his role as an explosive and versatile weapon for the Bills this season and many to come, but you still have to question whether or not all three runners are in the Bills' future as well.
