Is 2010 Urban Meyer's Last Season As Coach Of The Florida Gators?
Dissension is brewing. Regardless of what Florida head coach Urban Meyer is trying to feed the college football public, we all know something is up.
The rumbling has already started about Florida’s highly rated freshman class. The word is they’re a cocky bunch. Or at least that’s how senior center and leader of the offensive line Mike Pouncey feels.
The speculation intensified after big time recruits Dominique Easley and Ronald Powell missed a practice and reportedly contemplated transferring.
From the outside, the foundation of the program doesn’t look like it’s about to crack yet, but maybe this is just one of the few intensifying concerns that are chipping away at the team.
The Gators are far removed from their days as heavily favored unbeatables. This Florida team is one that has more questions than it does answers at this point.
The biggest of those questions is undoubtedly - what will life without Tim Tebow be like?
The reports on new quarterback, junior John Brantley, are overwhelmingly good. And the potential is there for a really big season. But there’s a lot of pressure to overcome, and it remains to be seen if Brantley has what it takes.
If he doesn’t, and the team falls, where exactly does that leave head coach Urban Meyer?
What if Urban Meyer has the season Pete Carroll had last year at USC. One of those “oh no we just fell back to the pack” type seasons. The realization that you are no longer a dominant force hits you square in the face with a reality biting blow. You can only sustain greatness for so long.
What does that circumstance lead to?
Especially for a coach that said he was leaving the team indefinitely just a few months ago?
What if Urban still has the health to coach, but he sees that his program is one of conflict and turmoil. And he also sees that growing monster a couple hundred miles up north that the Saban guy is controlling.
Could Urban Meyer actually leave the Florida Gators after back to back BCS appearances and a national championship season in 2008?
Meyer has moved up every step in his career from Bowling Green up to Utah before finally arriving in Gainesville. But there is still one step that has yet to be climbed. Meyer has never coached an NFL team.
If Florida falls flat this year, and the boys from the big league come calling for Meyer’s services, what will the outcome be?
There’s a lot of variables in the equation, but it’s definitely an idea to consider. Just think, this time last year, could you picture Pete Carroll in a Seahawks outfit?
It's also very possible Meyer could just hang up the coaching shoes entirely. He could just say I'm burnt out and I need to rest for a few years and go regroup.
Anything can happen, and the idea that this could be Meyer’s final season at the school he’s coached at the for the last five seasons is a very real possibility.
