Wyndham Championship 2010:Arjun Atwal Wins His Life Back On The PGA Tour
Arjun Arwal is in the fight of his golfing life at the Wyndham Championship, trying to get his tour privileges back, and tied for the lead at -18.
That's along with four, count 'em, four players now trying to ruin Atwal's pay in 2011.
Also in the lead are Lucas Glover, former US Open Champion along with John Rollins,John Mallinger, and David Toms with a birdie joining this -18 pack.
Justin Leonard just joined the -18 club with a birdie and now that's seven players at -18. This can't be good for Atwal who just missed a birdie himself to stay at -18.
This is now classified as a last round shootout. Most birdies in the last few holes win.
Arjun Atwal, Lucas Glover,John Rollins, John Mallinger, Justin Leonard,David Toms, and Michael Sim all are at -18.
Atwal just made a nice birdie on 14, and is now at -19. This has been some week for the 37 year old Atwal, recovering from injuries to both shoulders lifting weights, and without a Tour Card for 2011.
What a big big day this could be, and I am pulling for Atwal. It's a nice story.
David Toms just missed a birdie putt with his new over sized grips, and Justin Leonard grabbed another birdie to catch Atwal.
Leonard is playing the 18th hole and is way left off the tee.Atwal has hit his second shot left of the bleachers on the par five and game on.
Who can scramble out of trouble and grab one more birdie? Minus 20 will win this tournament.
Rollins is in at -18 as well as Michael Sim who has been in the clubhouse a while.
Atwal got a huge break with his lie, and chips just off the green for a birdie try.
Leonard is having a small meltdown on 18 and will drop at least one shot, and this tournament has been Atwal's all week. He just needs to finish it off.
Justin Leonard finishes with a bogey and is done at -18 also. The par four 507 yard 18th hole is a good test of par for these good players.
Atwal just missed his birdie by inches, and heads to the 17th tee, one shot clear of the field.
Toms is now in for birdie on 18 and makes it to -19 and tied for the lead.
Atwal sticks his tee shot just six feet away on the par three, and this is a huge putt now for Atwal, who would like to be one shot clear heading to 17.
David Toms has not won since 2006, while Atwal never has won in the USA on the PGA Tour.
Atwal does have many international titles. Arjun Atwal makes that birdie and is one shot ahead again.
Lucas Glover got another bogey, for three over par on the last eight holes and is finished on this outing.
Atwal's tee shot on 17 is perfect and he has a chance for one more birdie and a two shot lead heading into the last hole.
Atwal has seven wins on the Asian Tour, two wins on the European Tour, and one win somewhere else. Atwal knows how to finish and I say he gets this one. All he needs now is a par on 18.
Congratulations to Arjun Atwal and a determined gritty performance that people need to see was fantastic as he was a Monday qualifier for this event.
He is the first India born player to win on the PGA Tour if he can par the last hole.
He is slightly left off the tee and has some work as the pin placement is on the left as well. Anything on the green 30 feet or closer should be the winner.
Arjun has made an unusual club selection with a utility club with his plan to slam it into the grandstands for one chip and putt to win. That works as he slams it into the grandstand.
Weird play as I wonder why he just dd not hit a four iron or five iron on the green with 170 to the front.
This could back fire badly with a bad chip by Atwal. He has a five footer to win as he looks intently at Scott McCarron's line putting before him. He makes it.
Next week the Fed Ex Cup Play Offs start at the Barclays in Paramus New Jersey at the Ridgewood Country Club.
I will give you my fantasy picks and preview of the first play off round of the Fed Ex Cup next later this evening.
I hope you enjoyed the Wyndham Championship and first time winner Arjun Atwal.
