High School Hoops: Garrett Jones, a 5-Star Student Athlete
While many young stars are wrote upon because of their star athletic talent, Garrett Jones is written on not only because he is a phenomenal basketball player, but he's also a phenomenal student. Headed into his senior season, Jones gives an inside look on himself, his play and what to expect going forward.
Jones, a 6'0" shooting guard already takes the first step when talking his position. "I have been a shooting guard throughout high school, but I expect to be more of a combo guard in college. The skill set I have allows me to unleash many different weapons. I like to use ball screens to create open shots for myself, but more importantly my teammates. I also thrive in a fast paced, uptempo game."
Drive is something that many players have to determine for themselves. For Jones, it came close to home. "My family is what drives me, I didn't really start playing basketball until the 7th grade. My first AAU team was Full Package and my brother came to every game, he pushed me at a young age to be the best I can be."
"My parents were also hard on me. They knew I could play and made me realize that if I put my all into something I could have great results in the end. They have really inspired me. My family is the biggest part of me, I want to make them proud of what I'm doing so I put my all into basketball and school."
While everyone is hearing how much his family means to him, Jones would also like everyone to know "I'm a down to earth guy, I'm very humble, and I just enjoy life and take every opportunity to make the best of it."
Making the most of opportunities is what Jones is best at. Using his basketball skills, he draws in great comparisons to Chauncey Billups. As nice of a kid that Jones is, he downplays the comparisons, "A lot of people say Billups, but I say I play like Garrett Jones, myself. I love to attack the basket, hit mid-range shots and three pointers in transition."
Using that style of play Jones has gotten offers and calls from many schools. "I have three offers from Loyola in Chicago, Wisconsin-Green Bay, and Toledo. I've gotten calls from Cornell, Lehigh, Holy Cross, and a lot of Ivy League schools. Toledo and Cornell are at the top my list as of now."
The Ivy League is no joke, and neither is Jones' play which saw him score 51 points in a game last year against Mundelien High school. Jones downplays the high score saying, "If I had two points and 50 assists it would mean just as much as long as our team won."
With his family behind him and team first attitude, Garrett Jones is going to be playing somewhere, somewhere where you will remember his name. If you don't remember his name you'll surely be hearing it all across the college basketball world.
