Randy Couture Must Defeat James Toney in a Boxing Match in Order To Brag

King JAug 22, 2010

According to a press release by Goossen Tutor Promotions, Dan Goossen, promoter for James Toney, spoke about Toney's UFC debut on August 28th against UFC legend Randy Couture.

Goossen stated that back in 2003, he was in serious talks with UFC's former chairman Lorenzo Fertitta in having Toney fight a then prime Tito Ortiz who was the biggest star of the UFC at that time.

Dan went on to explain that Toney is a true warrior and willing to fight everyone, proven by his record with wins over former heavyweight boxing champions Holyfield, Peter, and Rahman. Also, the two current heavyweight champions, the Klitschko brothers, who have been dominating the heavyweight division, will not dare to fight him.

Toney who now is 41 years old and has a boxing record of 72(44)-6-3, is taking on the even older 47-year old Randy Couture next Saturday in a UFC fight with UFC rules.

Although Randy is pushing 50 years old, he is a legend in the octagon, and for many years was viewed as unbeatable in his prime. He still is capable to be a very dangerous fighter especially when his opponent has never fought in the octagon with UFC rules such as the use of kicking, ground game, four oz gloves, five-minute rounds, and of course, submissions.

Many fight fans are saying this is the first major UFC vs Boxing match to take place on this level with two legends of UFC and boxing fighting each other. However, Goossen explains that even if Toney were to lose in his UFC debut it will not mean all that much;  the true test would be for Randy to fight against Toney in a boxing match with boxing rules and regulations.

Goossen even went on to offer Randy to fight Toney again in a boxing match and offered him the exact same purse he is making from the UFC match. Randy has yet to accept the offer.

Personally, I agree with Goossen. Trained in both MMA and boxing myself, it is quite obvious that it is not comparing apples with apples. Each athlete would definitely have the tremendous advantage in their own sport of expertise when facing an opponent from the other.

It would be interesting none the less to see how well Toney does seeing that he has never fought in any MMA match with MMA rules and regulations before. He will obviously be at an overwhelming disadvantage come Saturday night.

He should have the advantages when it is a stand up striking competition, but once the fight hits the floor, all bets are off. For a man that has never submitted anyone before to face off against a legend who has been a life-long wrestling champion, would be like trying out out sing Mariah Carey in a karaoke contest.

As a fan of both boxing and MMA, come Saturday I'll be watching this UFC PPV from my pimp hotel suite in San Diego with the sole purpose of wanting to be entertained and wanting to see just a good fight, period. Just as a true fight fan should be. More importantly I also hope the great B.J. Penn can avenge his loss to Edgar that night.
