Player Power Rankings: Top 10 Players No One Gives Recognition To
Every NBA season, we have players of all different levels. They range from the guaranteed superstars, rookie sensations, players who come out of nowhere and shine for one season, and those who are consistent year after year.
Examples of the superstars, are: LeBron James, Dywane Wade, and Kobe Bryant.
As well, you have those players who are one-hit wonders.
Then, there are those who are rookie sensations: Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry, and Brandon Jennings.
Lastly, there are those players who have been steadily producing respectable numbers over their careers, and then some, which is the point of this article.
I have compiled a list of 10 players in particular who do not get enough recognition that a player of their caliber should receive.
Honorable Mentions
1 of 11
J.R. Smith: Guard, Denver Nuggets
Smith his a sharp shooting, attacking, hard nosed defender that never lacks confidence. Even when his team is about to get eliminated from the playoffs, he will always be trash talking and getting in your face. Smith is a great role or second tier player to have on your team. Because this guy can go off for 40 points on any given night.
Jeff Green: Forward, Oklahoma City Thunder
A do it all forward that plays great defense, and chips in around 15 points a game. Green is a bit undersized for the four position, but with the three being his natural position, and Durant does occupy that spot, the Thunder can not afford to risk his talents on the bench.
Aaron Brooks: Guard, Houston Rockets
Brooks is an up and coming guard that is starting to make a name for himself. Brooks has always been a sharp shooting guard. But no one thought he could actually carry a team and lead a team to success. Well he just do that when he was able to guide to Rockets to an improbable season with Yao in the middle.
Carl Landry: Forward, Sacramento Kings
Landry is a great teammate and player to have on your team. He is a great defensive player, and as we saw when he got traded to the Kings, he can put up some big offensive numbers as well. Look for him to have a great first full season as a King.
Andrea Bargnani: Center, Toronto Raptors
Bargnani, is a big body that has great hands around the rim, is a great three point shooter. He is an underrated defender, and his shot blocking abilities are improving drastically. He is improving very much on the offensive side as well. He is attacking more and has developed a low post game, that will work well with his shooting abilities. Look for Andrea to have a good year with out Bosh anymore.
Gerald Wallace: Forward, Charlotte Bobcats
Wallace is the all-around player that is an above average scorer, great defender, terrific leaper and athleticism, and is always making the highlight real for a thunderous dunk or a monstrous block. Wallace is a slasher that uses his athleticism to elevate over all and any defenders. He is a great player to have on your team mainly because of his defensive attributes, but he also is a good offensive threat.
Andrew Bogut: Center, Milwaukee Bucks
Bogut is a big frame that has good athleticism. Not great, but good enough for his big frame. He has great footwork around the him. Uses an array of spin moves and back downs to get defenders deep in the paint. Then he uses his soft hands to finish easily at the rim. He is a great rebounder and is showing signs of improvement on the scoring aspect of the game. Bogut is also a terrific shot blockers. It will be interesting to see how he comes back from his nasty hand injury.
David Lee: Forward, New York Knicks
2 of 11
Age: 27
2009-10 Points Per Game: 20.2
2009-10 Assists Per Game: 3.6
2009-10 Rebounds Per Game: 11.7
2009-10 Blocks Per Game: 0.5
2009-10 Steals Per Game: 1.0
One-Time NBA All-Star
Lee is one of the most hard nosed workers in the NBA. He is always hustling and always risking his body for the better of the team. He will do what ever it takes to win.
He is Mr.Double Double, he average 20 points and 12 rebounds for an entire season!
Lee is a fierce and nasty rebounder that is not afraid to bang elbows or get dirty when going for the boards.
He is a good athlete for a white guy, and has a big and powerful frame thats he uses to his advantage on the offensive side, especially with his soft hands that he uses to score with ease around the basket.
Lee is a great passer for a big man, and he runs the floor very well, is always out in front.
Lastly, you will never see Lee take a bad shot. He has the ability to shoot the three, and has a great mid-range jumper. But will only take them when necessary or asked upon.
Chauncey Billups: Guard, Denver Nuggets
3 of 11
Age: 33
2009-10 Points Per Game: 19.5
2009-10 Assists Per Game: 5.6
2009-10 Rebounds Per Game: 3.1
2009-10 Blocks Per Game: 0.1
2009-10 Steals Per Game: 1.1
One-Time NBA Champion (2004)
One-Time NBA Finals MVP
Five-Time NBA All-Star
One-Time All-NBA Second Team
Two-Time All-NBA Third Team
Two-Time All-NBA Defensive Second Team
Billups is not nicknamed Mr.Clutch for no reason. This guy puts up big numbers, and puts up those big numbers in the crunch time.
Look back at the 2004 NBA Finals. The Lakers were supposed to win. But thanks to Billups standing in their way, it did not happen.
Billups is a great decision-maker, and is always making his teammates around him that much more better. He is always putting them in a situation in which they can succeed in.
He is very efficient, never makes terrible turnovers, rarely misses a free-throw shot, and just simply knows when to take the right shot, and when he needs to take the game into his own hands.
Billups is an underrated defender in this league, he is always guarding opposing teams top flight point guards, and uses his body to over power them.
Lastly, Billups is a natural born leader, and well one of the most clutch players in the NBA.
Gilbert Arenas: Guard, Washington Wizards
4 of 11
Age: 28
2009-10 Points Per Game: 22.6
2009-10 Assists Per Game: 7.2
2009-10 Rebounds Per Game: 4.2
2009-10 Blocks Per Game: 0.3
2009-10 Steals Per Game: 1.3
Three-Time NBA All-Star
One-Time NBA Most Improved Player (2003)
One-Time All-NBA Second Team
Two Time All-NBA Third Team
It was just two season ago when Arenas was putting up MVP type numbers, driving his team into the playoffs, year after year vs the Cavaliers, and scoring, 40, 50, 60 points with ease for a long stretch.
But, then the injury bug came along and bit Arenas and he was forced to miss almost the entire season.
The he came back next season, and played with guns, and was suspended for the season.
It is very funny and interesting how a player that good and just fall off of everyone's radar?
Well in the 20 games Arenas did play last season, he did put up some good numbers considering the type of injury he had. He looked fit and ready to be an All-Star again.
Which is why next season, I think Arenas will have a huge chip on his shoulder, especially with all the talk about Wall taking over the Wizards. Arenas will come out and surprise many.
Rudy Gay: Forward, Memphis Grizzlies
5 of 11
Age: 24
2009-10 Points Per Game: 19.6
2009-10 Assists Per Game: 1.9
2009-10 Rebounds Per Game: 5.9
2009-10 Blocks Per Game: 0.8
2009-10 Steals Per Game: 1.5
Gay is as athletic as it gets. If anyone saw the USA game vs France, you would have saw that thunderous dunk from the baseline that made all the fans go nuts?
Well, that is Rudy Gay on a regular basis. Just no one really gives the poor guy much credit.
Gay is a very explosive scorer, he uses his quickness and long athletic arms to blow past defenders for the easy flush down the defenders neck.
His leaping ability is second to none in the league, and just utilizes to its full potential. Coming out of no where for incredible blocks, as well as magnificent acrobatic dunks.
Gay possesses a decent mid-range game that allows him to stretch the floor and always keep his opponents guessing on how he will attack them.
Zach Randolph: Forward, Memphis Grizzlies
6 of 11
Age: 29
2009-10 Points Per Game: 20.8
2009-10 Assists Per Game: 1.8
2009-10 Rebounds Per Game: 11.7
2009-10 Blocks Per Game: 0.4
2009-10 Steals Per Game: 1.0
One-Time NBA All-Star
One-Time NBA Most Improved Player (2004)
If you put aside Randolph's first two season, he was not able to get the chance to showcase himself. He never averaged less than 18 points or eight rebounds, with those eight rebounds, being his least.
So, Randolph can play the game. In my opinion, he is one of the top power forwards in the game. He was an all-star snub back in the 2006-07 season, but he was rewarded this season for his efforts with his new team, the Memphis Grizzlies.
Randolph really only ever gets talked about for having off court troubles, or being a menace in the locker room, as well as being shunned because Curry and Randolph were supposed to be the saviors for the Knicks front court problems when the brought Randolph over from the Blazers. He did average 19 and 11 a game. But if you are not winning games in New York, that is all that matters.
Then, he got shipped off to the Clippers, and well he did do good, it was never a right fit.
Lastly, he was dealt to the Grizzlies where he kept his mouth shut, no off court troubles, and just played basketball with the great talents he was given.
And what happened?
He was selected into the All-Star game. And I bet you some probably did not even know he was in the game!
Al Harrington: Forward, Denver Nuggets
7 of 11
Age: 30
2009-10 Points Per Game: 17.7
2009-10 Assists Per Game: 1.5
2009-10 Rebounds Per Game: 5.6
2009-10 Blocks Per Game: 0.4
2009-10 Steals Per Game: 0.9
Harrington is another all-around player that can score with the best of them, but does not get his chances to showcase those skills because he is stuck as the role player or the sixth man coming off of the bench.
He is a very good scorer, can scorer from almost anywhere on the floor. Harrington can attack the rim, he can shoot the three, he can also give you a low post game if you need it.
Al has the capability to play multiple positions. He was the strength and athleticism to play the center position. As well he has the offensive tools and skill sets to play the shooting guard position. As we have seen in Golden State, Harrington can be useful and successful from almost anywhere on the court.
Stephen Jackson: Guard, Charlotte Bobcats
8 of 11
Age: 32
2009-10 Points Per Game: 21.1
2009-10 Assists Per Game: 3.6
2009-10 Rebounds Per Game: 5.1
2009-10 Blocks Per Game: 0.4
2009-10 Steals Per Game: 1.6
One-Time NBA Champ (2003)
Captain Jack is a terrific leader and scorer. Hence the name "Captain Jack". He is always the vocal leader on the court for every team that he has played for.
Jackson can do it all, he can score and is a very streaky scorer, sometimes the guy just can not miss. He is a terrific passer and rebounder.
He does tend to shoot three more than what he should, because either the lane is wide open for the drive, or his skills are just so good, that it is a wast when he is just shooting up threes.
Despite some of his off court troubles, he is a terrific leader, and a born ready winner, that is always trying to do what it takes to win.
Caron Butler: Guard, Dallas Mavericks
9 of 11
Age: 30
2009-10 Points Per Game: 16.9
2009-10 Assists Per Game: 2.3
2009-10 Rebounds Per Game: 6.7
2009-10 Blocks Per Game: 0.3
2009-10 Steals Per Game: 1.4
Two-Time NBA All-Star
NBA All-Rookie First Team (2003)
Caron Butler was a stud when playing for the Wizards a few years back. Yes, he has hit a bit of a down hill since the days when he averaged 20 points and made back to back all-star appearances.
Butler his whole career has not been known as the shooting type shooting guard. With that being said, he is a terrific attacker from the wing. Butler has great upper body strength and can handle being hit around the basket, and still have the concentration to score the ball.
Butler has shown signs of greatness when playing on the Wizards. But you could definitely see Butler is not known to be a number one option on the offensive side.
This is why I think with him going into his first full season as a Maverick and being the second option to Dirk, it will relieve stress off of Butler and we could all see Butler back to his days in Washington.
David West: Forward, New Orleans Hornets
10 of 11
Age: 29
2009-10 Points Per Game: 19.0
2009-10 Assists Per Game: 3.0
2009-10 Rebounds Per Game: 7.5
2009-10 Blocks Per Game: 0.7
2009-10 Steals Per Game: 0.9
Two-Time NBA All-Star
West is a do it all type player that can power opponents in the low post with his large frame, long arms, and great footwork around the rim.
But, West is also a great passer and shooter for a big man, and uses that to his advantage when defenders choose to back off of him. He will then knock down the 12-15 foot jump shot.
Once the defenders realize he can shoot, West will blow by defenders, as you see in this picture, for the easy two.
West is a good defensive player and uses his body to out power defenders, and uses his long arms to block shots.
West is going to come in every season and give the Hornets 19 points and 8-10 rebounds easily.
Monta Ellis: Guard, Golden State Warriors
11 of 11
Age: 24
2009-10 Points Per Game: 25.5
2009-10 Assists Per Game: 5.3
2009-10 Rebounds Per Game: 4.0
2009-10 Blocks Per Game: 0.4
2009-10 Steals Per Game: 2.2
2006-07 Most Improved Player
Monta Ellis is as much as a pure scorer as it gets in this league, which is why I wonder why many people think he is overrated or not worthy to be talked about when the top of top scorers comes up. It is always Durant, Wade, Bryant, Carmelo, and James. Well, for those who do not know, Ellis only averaged three and four points less than off of, them and was sixth in the league in scoring.
Not bad for a guy who has not made an all-star game yet.
Ellis is an electrifying player to watch. He can score almost at will at some times. He just has the act to take over games when he wants to not. But not just with his scoring, with his abilities to pass the ball and find his open teammates.
Ellis as well is a great defenders, and his hands always active when it comes to the turnover department. Is tops in the leagues almost every season in that category.
For whatever reason, people think Ellis is overrated, or don't give him the credit he deserves.
Comment and let me know!
