J.T. Sounds OFF- August 11, 2010
What is wrong with Tiger Woods? That seems to be the question worth debating these days. We have just seen Tiger Woods play the worst golf of his career, finishing second to last at the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone in Akron, Ohio. The same tournament that Tiger has won seven times.
Is it his swing? Maybe it's all mental?
Heading into the final PGA major of the season, Whistling Straits at Wisconsin, the media is making it their top priority to solve the latest Tiger Woods mystery.
They have good reason. The world's number one golfer is in jeopardy of losing his number one ranking. And if Tiger doesn't get a mulligan from the golf Gods, he will have gone winless in PGA majors for a second consecutive year.
Solving this mystery has me thinking of the game of Clue. Play along at home.
The person? Tiger Woods.
The place? Golf Course.
The weapon or in this case the reason for Tiger's debacle? T.B.D.
Sean Foley was brought in to examine Tiger's swing. I can't see how a guy who was the world's best golfer and who will go down as one of the best of all time has sudden issues with his swing. This seems to be just a rouse to throw the rest of us off.
Rather the clue that everyone is missing is right in front of you.
It's in his head. That's right. The old noggin.
Sports are just as much mental as they are physical. In this case, Golf is probably more of a mental game than a physical one. Tiger isn't focused when he's on the golf course. It's as if he's lost his passion for the game. Not something I thought I'd ever say in regards to Tiger Woods.
If you take the drugs out of the Rock Star you no longer have a Rock Star. In other words, in most cases you're going to get a nervous freshman presenting their first speech in front of what seems to be hundreds of people. Stuttering words. Slurring their speech. Not exactly an entertaining show.
Tiger Woods' life has drastically taken a change. No more extra curricular activities after a golf tournament. No more late-night rendezvous' to clear out his head and keep his swagger. Instead, there are now hundreds of media outlets following his every move. Not to mention that he's going through a very public divorce and lawyers are now playing a huge role in his life.
Focusing on golf isn't top priority.
Dialing up Sean Foley to examine Tiger's swing is just an act of stalling. What Woods really needs is some time off to get a grip on his life and refocus his mind. A session or two with Dr. Phil wouldn't be bad either.
Mystery solved.
