Tuesdays at TNA: Tag Team Revival?
Welcome back to Tuesdays at TNA, where we discuss the hottest topics going on in Dixieland!
Fresh off arguably the greatest episode of Impact called The Whole F'n Show, there were only two topics that was on everyone's lips at the water cooler the next day (ok maybe not the water cooler, but at least on the TNA message boards). One was Fourtune's attack on the ECW veterans, and the awesomeness that was the Beer Money-Motor City Machine Guns series that concluded with the MCMGs retaining their TNA World Tag Team Championship. It launched the Guns into that discussion that they are without question the best tag team in the world (cue the RoH fans who would argue on The Briscoes behalf).
That said, was the recent best-of-five series just an aberration of great matches between two great teams, or is this the beginning of a major tag team revival not only in TNA but in wrestling overall? Many fans have been spoon fed by the WWE machine that tag teams don't matter, and I have to disagree. Although I would never state that tag team matches would ever main event a Pay Per View, there is always a place in the world of wrestling to see teammwork and cooperation, especially when there's a championship involved. Tag teams are always a great way to build up individuals who either have little or no direction and make them into a unit.
As for the talented duo of Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin, they now have their sights set on proving they are the best team in the land since defeating their longtime nemesis in Beer Money. However, who is in position to challenge them while BM is off to build up the Fourtune faction in their own war against EV 2.0? Let's break down their potential opponents and the likely chance they will become the number one contenders for the tag team crown, including a surprise entry in the end:
Team 3D—I know this bothers a lot of people who are tired of seeing the same old guys in the title scene, but any talk of tag teams in TNA must include the 23-time Tag Team Champions. Whether it is the WWE, ECW, Japan, or TNA, Bubba Ray and Devon will always make their presence known when it comes to the titles. However, with TNA making the push to finally let their own talent shine, expect Team 3D to use the tables strictly in their feud with Fourtune. Besides, they have feuded with the Guns in the past to mixed results. Probability: 10%
Generation Me—Max and Jeremy have only been highlighted on TNA's other show Xplosion and rarely have they been featured on Impact. All that may change soon as the former Young Bucks may get their chance to challenge Guns in an effort to showcase younger talent. The question is whether or not people will take them seriously or not, as they lack the charisma of the Guns in spite of their skills. Probability: 20%
Ink Inc.—Jesse Neal and his tattooed partner Shannon Moore have feuded with Team 3D in the past and may have to battle Generation Me for the right to take on the Guns. They can carry themselves well on the mic (at least Moore has) and have improved as a team. Much like the Guns and GM, Ink Inc. can wrestle the X-Division style match that can make for exciting contest. Expect them to deal with Max and Jeremy for a while. But, they will get a shot at the titles sooner rather than later. Probablilty: 30%
Desmond Wolfe/Magnus—This is a new tag team that has been featured more on Xplosion lately. This new version of The British Invasion has major potential, with Wolfe finally getting into an angle which could see him scoring some pinfall victories. Remember when I mentioned why some tag teams are placed together to help two individuals going nowhere? This is exactly the case.
Also, these two can present the straight-laced heels that will be a perfect foil for the high-flying faces in Sabin and Shelley. Combine the power of Magnus with the greatness that is Wolfe and these guys could collide at Bound For Glory for the tag team straps. Probability: 60%
Finally, what about the team the Guns beat for the titles? I know that Beer Money is busy helping out the Fourtune clique, but don't think for a second that once they are done with EV 2.0 that they will not set their sights on getting revenge on the Guns. Having a few months away from one another will be good when it comes time to renew their battles.
First, do you think that tag team wrestling has made a revival, or is it a short lived fix?
Oh, by the way, if The Briscoes do decide to come to Orlando, all bets are off the board!
Please make sure to check out this and other hot TNA topics on our new radio show "The Dungeon", Sundays from 6-8pm.
