Cleveland Browns vs. Green Bay Packers: Jake Delhomme Makes It Look Easy

Brian DiTullioAug 16, 2010

If the first drive in the first preseason game is any indicator of how the Browns offense will look in the 2010 season, then Browns fans have something to believe in for a change.

Let's get the caveat of "first preseason game" out there right now and acknowledge the realities that come with it.

Are we finished? Good, now let's focus on the positive.

In the first drive, which was a battle of first team players, Jake Delhomme engineered an 11-play, 80-yard touchdown drive and did it with an ease it seems hasn't been seen in Cleveland in a generation.

The Browns' offenses have been so bad in recent years, it felt like watching Bernie Kosar out there Saturday night on that first drive, and that's a good feeling to have.

Seneca Wallace also looked good behind center, which also made the evening sweet because injuries happen, and it's comforting to know you don't have to hit the panic button should the injury bug bite Delhomme.

Going through the lineup of quarterbacks, Colt McCoy looked like a rookie third-round draft pick, but that's okay. His shaky performance is nothing to get upset or worried about.

Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen didn't look all that great either, and Bradford has a franchise resting on his throwing arm.

The only thing McCoy will have on his arm this year will be a clipboard, so let him make these rookie mistakes now, learn from them, and hopefully this team will have a fresh, eager young quarterback with some good NFL knowledge in his head a few years down the road.

It is important to note the Browns wide receivers caught passes this year, something that was lacking the last few years.

Moving to the defense, watching T.J. Ward play was a delight. If Ward can keep up that level of play during the season, where it seemed like he was all over the field and a constant threat to whoever was taking the snaps for Green Bay, then the Browns defense will become a lot more respected as the season wears on.

The defensive line also shut down the Packers running game no matter who the personnel was on the field, which is very encouraging.

Phil Dawson was in midseason form, winning the game for the Browns and perhaps sending a message to the front office about his contract situation. Whatever happens with Dawson, making game-winning field goals only can help his cause, even if it's only  preseason.

There were some negatives about the game, mainly concerning the defensive being unable to stop Aaron Rodgers, but that's to be expected and those critiques have been made elsewhere. At the end of the day, the Browns secondary has to step it up, and that's about all that really can be said about that.

It was a very good first preseason game, and all Browns fans can do is hope the positives shown in this game carry through to Week One and beyond.
