Brock Lesnar Or Cain Velasquez: Who Does Junior Dos Santos Really Want?
Junior Dos Santos has quite the work cut out for him now that he's beaten Roy Nelson.
He has to await the winner of UFC 121's Heavyweight title fight before he gets his shot at the belt.
But in reality, who poses the better fight for Junior Dos Santos—or rather, which fighter between Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez is the fighter that Junior wants to face in the cage?
This is stylistically speaking, of course.
You'd think that since the two halves of the UFC 121 main event are both wrestlers, they'd both present the same degree of difficulty for JDS in the cage.
Lesnar is in the WWE's record books as one of the few champions in their promotion to have actual wrestling experience before going into the Connecticut-based pro-wrestling goliath in 2002.
Lesnar's resume going into his UFC debut against Frank Mir—excluding the WWE credentials—actually made him seem like more of a prospect than a "freak show fighter."
What freak show fighter nearly beats one of the sport's best non-Brazilian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners ever to fight at Heavyweight?
If you can name that guy, you're a smarter guy that I am, because I don't think the near-finish of Mir was something a freak show fighter would do.
Lesnar's only clear disadvantage on paper might be in the striking department, whereas Brock has an advantage taking down Velasquez.
As far as defending takedowns and submissions, the two might be even on that, although Shane Carwin might beg to differ.
Cain has shown improved striking and has explosive takedowns mixed with insane cardio to boot, though JDS proved in both the Nelson fight and in his fight in Dallas against Cro Cop that he doesn't need to finish the fight in the first round in order to have a chance to win.
If the fight has to go more than two rounds, Dos Santos is a gamer to go more than two rounds.
I think either way, one can't say Junior would have an easier time with Brock compared to Cain or vice versa.
In all honesty, "Junior would have a slightly less difficult time with" sounds like a better phrase to use before Lesnar's name or Velasquez's name.
Lesnar may be a less quicker of a fighter than Cain is, and maybe Junior would have a tougher time with Cain than Brock, but I doubt that there is such a thing as "an easy fight with Brock."
Heck, the loss Mir handed him almost actually saw Mir lose the fight.
So in reality, I can't really decide who would be the fighter that Junior Dos Santos has the stylistic advantage over.
Both men want the fight on the ground, though Brock might have an easier time breaking through the takedown defense.
Dos Santos is widely regarded as this generation's most dangerous heavyweight striker, so Cain may be the closest to the best fit for JDS there, although we all can expect Lesnar's striking game to improve greatly in his career.
So who does Junior Dos Santos work best against, stylistically speaking?
Like I said, I can't decide.
Can you?
