NCAA Violations: Who is Violating Whom?

Brian WinettAug 13, 2010

For decades we've heard about school after school and player after player getting in trouble for some sort of NCAA bylaw violation.

It's understandable that the NCAA would like to protect the sanctity of its amateur athletes; if they really want this to stop though, they, in conjunction with the NFL, would have to sanction the agents.

Busting drug users to try to stop the drug trade is as fruitless as busting college kids for needing money.

People abused as children will likely turn to drugs and people in college will always need money. Going after the abused and the poor is like punishing the victim.

Who should be punished are the vultures that prey upon these poor college students by trying to give them money—the agents.

Then with that being said, you have to ask yourself why isn't this already implemented?

If the NFL simply suspended agents' licenses for five years for a violation, a lot more agents would play by the rules.

Furthermore, why does the NCAA even have these rules in the first place? Which leads to the question; who is really the vulture?

There's and old bumper sticker that says don't sell drugs, the government hates competition. Well the message is strong to all others from the NCAA, don't profit off of college kids, the NCAA hates competition.

The NCAA DEMANDS that those creating their product (the players) are not paid anything over what can get them Ramen noodles to cook up on their hot plate in their shared bedroom.

The NCAA, the colleges, and most major broadcasters are making a killing off of people who by rule can not be paid.

No endorsements, no compensation for the billions they bring in every year, nothing but a minuscule scholarship that doesn't even touch upon what these players are really worth.

Then the NCAA wants to even limit these scholarships.

If the government wants to stick its head into sports like it is with steroids, let it look into the indentured servitude that is the NCAA.

What the NCAA says is that it wants to protect its students from who knows what.  Making money? Having a nice car?

Isn't this America?

That is, isn't this the America that abolished slavery?

Not to lessen the plight of the actual slaves who had it much worse than these athletes do. The comparison is made to illustrate the point that these students are not free to capitalize on their current successes in the most capitalistic country in the world.

It is clear the NCAA is only out for its own interests, seeking to capitalize on the poor by institutionalizing a system that is fundamentally unfair to the players.

What happens to the college athlete who becomes a college star, creating wealth for colleges and associations only to hurt himself before getting to the NFL?

He'll either be a strain on the system of the country, or he'll have to work a low paying job the rest of his life because the NCAA refuses to reward the financial contribution this player made to the organization.

Doesn'y every other college student have the opportunity the capitalise on their investments in college?

From the creator of Facebook to the guy who wrote "Lethal Weapon" while in college.

The only thing actually that makes me hesitate in calling this system racist is the fundamental belief that this is classist

In slave days, people argued that slaves liked being slaves. That slaves wouldn't know any other way.

What's the NCAA's argument for not paying those who makes them wealthy beyond beyond belief?

That poor people like being poor?

That these young adults wouldn't know what to do with their money should they get paid what they deserve?

Any argument the NCAA could have still doesn’t change the fact that these stars are not being fairly compensated for their contribution to a multi-billion dollar a year industry.

The NCAA says it protects its players while keeping them broke and desperate.

The question is, who is going to protect these players from the NCAA?
