PGA Championship Leaderboard: 10 Guys To Watch on Friday
Once the fog lifted, Whistling Straights was very kind to the field on Thursday. The delay extended the First Round into Friday morning, when the likes of Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar hit the links to conclude play.
Kuchar has taken full advantage of the soft greens to take the lead at 5-under par and Mickelson remains in striking distance despite three-putting number nine.
With play already delayed by over three hours, storms expected to hit the western shores of Lake Michigan this afternoon could make things even more complicated. At the moment, the final pairings aren't scheduled to tee off until around 7 PM eastern time.
Here's a look at 10 players to keep an eye on as Second-Round play begins.
No. 10: Angel Cabrera
1 of 9
El Pato usually saves his best for major championships, which is why it's not surprising that he is near the top of Leaderboard. Cabrera is currently tied for sixth at 3 under-par. Depending on what happens with the weather on Friday afternoon, Cabrera could be in for a long day and a fall down the Leaderboard in Round Two.
No. 9: Seong-Yul Noh
2 of 9
The young South Korean finds himself right in the thick of things at 4 under-par at the end of the first round. The second-youngest player to ever win on the European Tour should be a contender throughout the weekend—and maybe into next week if play doesn't conclude until Monday.
No. 8: Sergio Garcia
3 of 9
What has happened to Sergio? His performance on Thursday was indicative of his struggles on tour this season. He shot a 6 over-par 78 and is currently tied for 140th place. Barring a miracle run, he appears headed for his third missed cut of 2010.
No. 7: Matt Kuchar
4 of 9
Despite playing with a broken toe, Kuchar has marched to the head of the pack after finishing a 5 under-par 67 Friday morning. The injury hasn't hampered him yet, but could be something to watch as the weekend continues, especially if rounds overlap into Saturday.
No. 6: Ernie Els
5 of 9
After his first bogey-free round ever at a PGA Championship, Els finds himself in a four-way tie for second place, just one shot behind leader Matt Kuchar. Els has been inconsistent on tour this season, but should be a fixture on the Leaderboard throughout the weekend, meaning his six-year drought in majors could finally come to an end.
No. 4: Phil Mickelson
6 of 9
After revealing that he has been suffering from psoriatic arthritis, the world No. 2 has had an up-and-down First Round at Whistling Straights. Normally, it would be unrealistic for Mickelson to play with much consistency, but the temperate conditions expected throughout the weekend make it possible for any golfer to suddenly vault up the Leaderboard.
No. 3: Dustin Johnson
7 of 9
After witnessing his collapse at the U.S. Open in June, it's difficult to think that Dustin Johnson has what it takes to win his first major this weekend. But his ability to drive the ball helped him produce birdies on the par-5 fifth and 16th, and has him four shots back heading into the Second Round.
It will be interesting to see if one of the PGA Tour's rising stars is better at being the hunter, rather than the hunted.
No. 2: Tiger Woods
8 of 9
No matter what, all eyes will be on Tiger Woods. With delays pushing his Second-Round tee time back to 6:45 Eastern Time, Woods will most likely be forced to finish the majority of his round on Saturday morning.
In case you haven't heard, Woods has a new swing coach. It's not official, but his work with Sean Foley throughout the last three days has opened eyes and produced decent results.
Woods has rebounded from his disaster at Bridgestone to stay within striking distance of the leaders at 1 under-par.
No. 1: Bubba Watson
9 of 9
After shooting at 4 under-par 68 on Thursday, Watson got emotional when he was asked how his last year had been. Already dealing with his father's struggle with cancer, Watson feared that his wife was also stricken with a tumor, only to eventually learn that she simply had an enlarged pituitary gland.
One of the funniest and most likable players on tour has only one career PGA Tour win, but there's no reason to believe he won't be in contention down the stretch.
