Chelsea v Manchester United: 5 PlayersTo Watch in the Community Shield

Will TideyAug 7, 2010

Double winners Chelsea take on Manchester United in Sunday's Community Shield, with both teams looking to steal the initiative ahead of the new EPL campaign.

The traditional season opener usually pits the EPL champions against the FA Cup winners, but seeing as Chelsea hold both trophies, league runners-up United provide the opposition.

Here are my five players to watch.

No. 1: Michael Owen

1 of 5

After injury wrecked his 2009/10 campaign, Michael Owen will be desperate to make a statement at Wembley and push his case for a regular spot in United's starting XI.

It was at Wembley in February's Carling Cup Final that Owen's season was effectively ended by injury, so what better venue to start a comeback.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Owen and Wayne Rooney will play 45 minutes each.

No. 2: Nicolas Anelka

2 of 5

'Le Sulk' was sent home from the 2010 World Cup after an exchange with the France coach Raymond Domenech, and will be desperate to get back to the business of scoring goals.

That said, it will be interesting to judge the reaction of Chelsea fans after Anelka said Tottenham were "absolute favourites" for the title.

No. 3: Javier Hernandez

3 of 5

The lightning-fast Mexican winger has impressed in pre-season and been among the goal scorers.

Hernandez seems certain to feature at some stage at Wembley, and will relish a chance to run at the Chelsea defence.

No. 4: John Terry

4 of 5

The Chelsea captain was heavily criticized for his performance at the World Cup, and in some quarters for his outspoken press conference that appeared to alienate some of his England team-mates.

Terry's reputation is on the line this season, as is his place in England's back four. So what better way to start than by nullifying Wayne Rooney and Co. at Wembley?

No. 5: Darron Gibson

5 of 5

Gibson is seen as the natural successor to Paul Scholes at Old Trafford, and Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested he'll play a key role for United this season.

The 22-year-old Irishman has impressed in pre-season and will be looking to add goals from midfield if he gets his chance this campaign.
