Will Dana White Cut Anderson Silva If He Loses?

Dale De SouzaAug 6, 2010

I'd like to do something I never do when I open up an article, and thank MMA Junkie publicly for this bit of news and clarification.

See, the past few articles (sans the slide shows) I've done that have featured Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen as my subjects all involved news that Dana White would cut Anderson Silva if he auditions for "Dancing with the Stars" one more time during a title defense.

I even questioned if White really would or not, and got some comforting feedback on the matter.

What finally got clarified was a question I had ever since the Silva-Sonnen fight was announced:

Would Dana White's declaration stand if Chael Sonnen beats Anderson Silva?

I just wondered a bit off and on: If Chael knocks out, submits, or goes 25 minutes dominating Silva tomorrow night—which by the way, I would prefer to another 25-minute dance number, to be honest—then does that count as a "bad performance" in Dana White's eyes?

Thanks to my always-reliable source of MMA news outside of B/R, I've gotten my answer.

The answer, for those who are wondering, reads like so:

"F*** NO, DALE! SILVA GETTING BEAT BY SONNEN DOESN'T COUNT!"

I'm glad that's the answer I got, and I understand why Dana wouldn't count Silva's first loss as a poor performance.

I mean, look at guys like BJ Penn.

Whether it was an illness, underpreparation, or bad judging, the fact remains that Abu Dhabi was the site of a bad night for him.

Everyone has a night when they aren't themselves, and if at least the first two out of Silva's past three title defenses weren't examples of Silva having a bad night, then it's not out of the question that he will.

It's not totally certain that Vitor Belfort gets the winner either, so you never can say that something actually will or actually won't happen until you see it for yourself.

The basic point is that even the pound-for-pound king of the sport can have a bad night, even if you couldn't tell it from two of his past three defenses.

If Silva did against Patrick Cote or Thales Leites, I know I couldn't tell.

Everyone who will be watching UFC 117 better anticipate Silva having a rough night tomorrow night, because as much as I do take some strong exception to some of the trash-talk Sonnen has been dishing out, there's no question he's going to bring it to Silva.

He said he's going to make Silva fight, and I hope he does make Silva fight, but I will still pull for Silva.

I'm just glad that when Dana said "poor performance," he didn't mean a loss to Sonnen.

Now I think I can rest peacefully tomorrow night no matter what happens in the main event.

My official prediction: Silva will face Sonnen, and the best man will walk out of Oakland as the Middleweight Champ.
