Liverpool FC: Five Predictions for Liverpool in 2010-11

Martin McGinnisAug 6, 2010

As the new season draws nearer, my lips are licking with anticipation and my brain ticking over in what might happen this season. My brain ticked as much as it could before I had to find some avenue to release my thoughts. So here I am, and Bleacher Report is that avenue.

I am Liverpool fan and a passionate one at that. I supported Rafa Bentiez as much as I supported Houiller and Evans before him…unconditionally. Each manager has brought some success with them. Rafa brought that famous night in Istanbul. Houllier brought the treble and Evans brought the Spice boys. Okay that was a little unfair to old Roy, he did maintain the pass and move motto passed on through the years and the Coca Cola cup win against Bolton was the first success I remember as a kid supporting Liverpool.

Last season was a disappointment but with Roy Hodgson renewing my optimism after a promising start, I look forward to the coming season with great vigour. With a new manager installed things can change drastically  and with a bickering board room to match, could you really blame Liverpool fans for worrying all summer long? While rival fans were dreaming of what world cup stars they would acquire, we were just hoping to hold on to ours.

Thankfully with Kenny Huang and an apparent host of other business men cueing up to buy the club, the dark cloud that has hung so mercilessly over Anfield maybe finally lifted. To quote the famous Liverpool anthem: You‘ll never walk alone “At the end of the storm is a golden sky.”

Liverpool fans can hope for a golden sky but the coming season is all about stability and I cannot see a better man then Roy Hodgson to bring it. So without further ado I bring my bold, idiotic, extremely biased and ueseless predictions for Liverpool’s season.

Alberto Aquilani to have a good season

1 of 5

I predicted good things from the Italian playmaker last season but alas it didn’t work out. A number of factors attributed to discontent amongst Liverpool fans that Alberto was a waste of money.

Returning from a long hiatus is tough, couple that with having to settle to a new style of play, team mates and a completely new culture and language and it is near impossible to play your best football.

Thankfully, we did see flashes of class from the Italian last season and I predict those flashes to be more frequent this season as long as he stay free of injury and Liverpool stay clear of Serbian Witch doctors, Which brings me to my next prediction.

Liverpool's Injury woe's to subside

2 of 5

There is no doubt last season was a disaster in relation to injuries. Fernando Torres, Daniel Agger, Aquilani and Gerrard (pictured right) all at one time or another suffered long term injuries last season.

Liverpool noticing the problem have brought in leading Australian sports physician Peter Brukner who joined with Liverpool after the world cup. Brukner is a best selling author of sports medicine books and owns the largest medic clinic dedicated to Sports in Australia. I have no doubt he got a lot of his business and practice on injury crock Harry Kewell.

All jokes aside this is a serious step needed for the good of the club. The horse placenta treatments last year were shocking and although I respect Liverpool for doing something different, I rather the club could deal with the injuries themselves rather than travelling to Serbia to an unlicensed doctor to heal their players. So with that I predict Liverpool's injury woe's to lessen this year.

Joe Cole to score against Chelsea, Yossi to score against Liverpool

3 of 5

With the two talented midfielders traded clubs I have an almost physic feeling that one or both will score againsit their former clubs this year.

Over the years, soccer players have made a habit of scoring against their former clubs. I think this season, with no knowledgeable science other than a hunch, I predict both players to score against their former clubs.

I'l even go one better, Joe Cole to score at Stamford Bridge and Yossi to score at Anfield. You couldn't write in a script!

Construction Work to Began On New Stadium

2012 the last year on the Mayan Calendar and the bringer of the Acopoalse and all that mumbo jumbo! In football terms, 2012 was the expected season that Liverpool were to be playing their first game at Stanley Park. With Hicks and Gillet not able to generate the 400 million needed to cover the costs, work has become non existent and now Stanley Park resembles a ghost town.

Thankfully, with news that the club will be sold, fans can hope that work may finally began on a 55,000 seated stadium. Yes it will be sad occasion to leave the history of Anfield behind but to progress in todays soccer world, Liverpool need to become more business savvy and marketable and that means leaving the great past behind.

Liverpool to Challenge for the Title

5 of 5

Told you I was biased! The truth be told last season was a funny old campaign for every club. The gap has shortened on all the big four and Liverpool were the unfortunate team to suffer the consequences finishing a lowly 7th.

But today as I looked at the rival teams around us I don’t look are the squad enviously. Rooney? No thanks Il keep Fernando. Lampard? No Il keep Steve G thanks. Vermaelen? Vidic? Terry? No thanks, Il keep Agger and Carragher thanks. Van De Sar? Pepe Riena will do the finest!

Liverpool fans should look at the rival teams and ask how many would I like at Liverpool and how many would get into the team. Liverpool I admit are missing one more genuine world class player but with new ownership anything is possible!
