Brett Favre Retirement: How The Ripple Effect Affects Others

Daniel WolfAug 3, 2010

Brett Favre is allegedly retired.

Sadly, he couldn't have figured this out sooner in order to help the Minnesota Vikings move on without Favre.

Whatever the reason Favre lets his decision linger will be talked about for many years into the future, and perhaps he intentionally has been doing this to add to his legacy.

Who knows.

In the end, Favre waiting to make this "final" decision does not shine a bright light on him since he is leaving behind a team and a fan base that could have better prepared for this much, much sooner in the offseason.

The following is the ripple effect of Favre's decision within the organization and for the fans too.

Favre Ripple Effect: Quarterback Position in Disarray

Jackson is once again penciled in as the Vikings' starting quarterback, but the team could have prepared better for this if they had known earlier by going out in free agency and getting either Donovan McNabb or Jason Campbell.

They do have Sage Rosenfels on the roster too, but Favre's absence significantly downgrades the positions overall.

Favre Ripple Effect: Sidney Rice To See a Decrease in Production

Rice had a breakout year in 2009 where he even went to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his young career.

That was mainly due to the connection he made while Favre was the quarterback.

Now that Favre is gone, Rice's production will most likely drop in 2010.

Favre Ripple Effect: Brad Childress Will Fight Harder To Win Games

Favre was Childress' wildcard and best chance at trying to win a Super Bowl for Minnesota, but now that Favre is gone, Childress will have to fight even harder to win games.

Bottom line, when Favre was under center, opposing defenses feared the future Hall of Famer.

With Jackson behind center, opposing defenses will attack and completely different and possibly new game plans will have to be developed quickly to effectively have Jackson run the offense.

Favre Ripple Effect: Adrian Peterson Will Be The Main Focus Again

With both Favre and Peterson in the Vikings' backfield, defenses had to respect both players because they were dangerous in their own right.

Now that Favre is gone, defenses will stack the box to stop Peterson and force the Vikings' offense to throw and have Jackson beat them in the air.

Favre Ripple Effect: The 2010 NFL Draft Could Have Been Different

If Favre would have given the Vikings more advanced noticed that he was not continuing his NFL career, the Vikings could have drafted much differently back in April's 2010 NFL Draft.

Perhaps they would have drafted a quarterback of the future.

Regardless of how the draft might have gone, it would have indeed gone down much different than how it actually happened.

Favre Ripple Effect: Letting Down The Fans

Those who are hurt the most are the Vikings fans who were ready for a Super Bowl run in 2010 with the Vikings being one of the top-ranked teams in the league.

Now that Favre has made his last-minute decision many Vikings fans may be thinking about Favre in a similar way that Cleveland Cavalier fans look at LeBron James now.

A sense of abandonment.

Favre Ripple Effect: Letting Down The City

7 of 10

Favre's decision may affect the city of Minneapolis in the end because the team may have stuck around if they continued their winning ways, but with his departure, this could be a ticket out of town.

Los Angeles continues to look for a team.

Does the Los Angeles Vikings sound good at all?

Favre Ripple Effect: His Legacy

Without a doubt Favre will be a first-time ballet candidate into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

But his legacy might be remembered more for his on-and-off decision to retire, and then to come back.

In the end, if the Vikings suffer this season, a lot of blame will go on the shoulders of Favre since he made his decision to retire too late for the Vikings to recover for the rest of the season.

This could lead to his legacy being questioned too.

Favre Ripple Effect: Madden 11 Might Still Have Favre In It

9 of 10

With the new Madden 11 video game set to release on August 10, which is only a week away from Favre's announcement, Favre has already ruined that game since the game is already being pressed to sell.

Hopefully EA Sports will send out a patch to remove Favre from the game entirely as soon as it is released.

Any Other Ripple Effects?

There are many more ripple effects that Favre's retirement has caused not only for the Vikings and its fans, but across the NFL.
