After Chamakh's Arrival, Should RVP Play As A Right Winger.

Mohamed Eldin MasriAug 3, 2010

With the arrival of Chamakh, the French-born Moroccan International and his fine display of form, fans have been wondering where each player will play upfront for the start of the new Arsenal season.

Football websites have already guessed the positions of the players in the 4-3-3 formation displayed by Arsenal since last season. People expect Robin van Persie (RVP) as the main striker and have put Chamakh as a right winger for the team. But if Wenger really did insert Chamakh as a right winger, is that the correct decision?

Does Marouane Chamakh have what it takes to make the right crosses and dribble his way to the edge of the field? Based on what's been shown, that is highly unlikely.

Chamakh is a great striker, has tremendous aerial abilities, and can be useful to Arsenal in many ways. But he is more of a guy who holds the ball until his teammates arrive to help, rather than the guy who is technically gifted and can dribble his way through a number of oppositions.

At the start of the season, Bendtner played on the wings for a while; he was rarely ever able to score a goal during that period due to the lack of chances, and he never got the crosses he so much desires.

After returning from injury he was installed as the main striker and was able to impress greatly at the end of the season, scoring many crucial goals in the process.

Chamakh has the same style as Nicklas Bendtner, only at a more evolved level due to his age and the fact that he got more playing time than Bendtner.

Chamakh has what it takes to score the goals needed for Arsenal, but his lack of vision would hinder his game at the right winger position. He also doesn't have the perception that RVP has—the ability to look at things from a different point of view.

RVP has what it takes to get out of tight spots and has the technique to make a killer cross or pass that would lead to a goal with ease.

This case becomes more evident with Messi and CR9 (who is expected to be CR7 again shortly).

Messi plays as a winger for Barcelona, usually playing on the right side, who cuts in and makes a pass or takes a shot at goal, while CR9 plays as a left winger and cuts in on goal and takes a shot or makes the right pass.

RVP can fit into this role with ease; his left foot is much stronger than that of Ronaldo or Messi, and his vision is no less than that of the Portuguese or the Argentine. He has what it takes to shine, and he is always consistent when playing—always on form.

The problems that always arise with RVP are the endless injuries that have followed him since he joined the red and white army. But when on form, RVP is the deadliest weapon Arsenal have, even more so than Fabregas. A testament to that was the 2008-2009 season where RVP impressed more than any other member in the Arsenal team.

In fact, RVP was actually a winger in his younger days. Even when Henry was the main striker for the Arsenal team, RVP still scored mad goals when playing in that position.

RVP even had his own signature trick (the scoop turn) that he used on many occasions to great effect.

It can be noted that RVP hasn't performed any of his tricks in quite a while; ever since he converted to main striker, he hasn't played in the same style.

However, that is mainly due to the fact that RVP's role doesn't require any trickery or skills, but instincts, positioning, and a fine finishing touch.

While RVP and Chamakh are two great individuals who possess the required skills, Chamakh doesn't quite have what it takes to score 20 goals a season from the wings. Wenger needs to consider his options to the fullest, otherwise Chamakh won't look like a worthy signing, and Chamakh can't get the blame.

While it's still unknown what Wenger has in mind, it's safe to say that RVP has the ability to make the difference for Arsenal this upcoming season. All the fans have to do is hope his injuries don't get the better of him—something that is starting to become the norm, rather than just an unfortunate accident.
