Liverpool Transfers: Reds Sign 'The Wrong Young' from Aston Villa
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed the bid for Aston Villa right back Luke Young. According to Young's agent, Andy Evans, the two clubs have agreed over a price of £ 2.5m for the transfer from Aston Villa to Liverpool.
Luke Young is the current right back for Aston Villa and also an England International who had been a former England right back.
Aston Villa is in surplus of the full backs and side backs and so the move from Villa Park to Anfield will not itch the Aston Villa manager too much.
Martin O'Neill, the AV manager, has agreed upon the terms and so soon the full back will be an addition to the Reds squad. Though this move for a 31-year-old man may raise eyebrows around the world, but the defender can play both as full back and right back and so can add strength to the fragile Liverpool back.
Liverpool is short of players at back after Emiliano Insua has been ready for a move to Fiorentina in Italy. Also, Fabio Aurelio had left the club on a free transfer. Philipp Degen, another right back of Liverpool, has also been told to look for newer pastures as Hodgson has separate plans to establish a new order.
Luke Young joined Villa Park on a fee of £ 5.5m from Middlesbrough two years ago and had impressive performances to follow. But his run was cut short by series of injuries and a personal tragedy where his 17-year-old brother was found dead.
Young is currently one of the highest paid ones in AV and the manager will be happy to offload him to another team. So, that brings signing the deal one step closer.
However, fans are not so happy on signing of a 31-year-old back who has retired from International football, and are doubtful about the plans of their manager. Needless to say, that Hodgson has been adding cheaper strengths to the squad and Young will bring some good experience in the team.
However, as my title says, he is the "wrong Young" from Villa Park.
Liverpool fans were hoping to add some bigger names to their kitty. While Ryan Babel had a bad season in 2009-10, Albert Riera has also left the club and an addition of a winger like Ashley Young from AV could mean a lot to the Reds at the moment.
It is time which will give the verdict about Hodgson's decision, but for now many of the Liverpool fans and the supporters of other teams also are in parallel thinking.
If Roy Hodgson could have signed Ashley Young in place of Luke Young, then it would have been a season worth watching for Liverpool.
