Who The Experts Are Picking: The 10 Most Underrated 2011 CFB Recruits

Michael PintoJul 27, 2010

For the most part, the experts don't agree on anything. That sparked a second article on the subject, detailing the most overrated recruits on the experts' lists. But there's still another area to be addressed and might be the most critical of the three.

The underrated recruits.

Obviously there are many prospects that fly under the radar, receive low scouting grades, and turn out to be stars. But those aren't the players we're targeting here. The names on this list are those that are undeniable blue-chip prospects you'd be shocked to see ranked so low.

So which stars got dissed big-time by one of the experts?

10. Scout's Jeoffrey Pagan at No. 99 Pick

1 of 10

Commitment: Florida

He's rated as the 17th prospect by ESPN and the 25th prospect by Rivals.

Pagan is a little on the raw side and needs to work on his technique, but his potential is through the roof and it wouldn't be surprising at all if he ended up being the top defensive end from the 2011 class.

9. Rivals' Jermauria Rasco at No. 116 Pick

2 of 10

Commitment: Uncommitted

At 250 lbs he runs a 4.6-second 40-yard dash. That's rare speed from a defensive end, and a tool that helps him cover the field in run support, pass protection or as a pass-rusher about as well as anyone in the country.

There are concerns about his technique and ability to disengage blockers at times, but these are minor issues that shouldn't keep him out of the top 20-30 rankings.

8. Scout's Kiehl Frazier at No. 104 Pick

3 of 10

Commitment: Auburn

At least ESPN and Rivals don't diss him too severely, putting him at No. 53 and No. 62, respectively. Scout muffed this one bad though, putting Frazier outside of the top 100 in their rankings. At the end of the day, Auburn fans should be happy about this.

You can bet Frazier is already developing quite the chip on his shoulder. This kid is a born winner who's going to prove a lot of scouts wrong.

7. ESPN's Mike Bellamy at No. 82 Pick

4 of 10

Commitment: Clemson

Once he finds just the smallest crease of space to work with, he really could be gone. If you're looking for your home-run hitter at running back, Bellamy is your guy.

He's ranked No. 13 on Rivals and No. 26 on Scout. How he managed to slip all the way to No. 82 on ESPN is hard to figure out.

6. Rivals' Trevon Randle Outside The Top 250 Pick

5 of 10

Randle is somewhat of an under-the-radar player who hasn't gotten the type of respect he deserves from any of the experts at this point. He's ranked 66th on Scout, but is outside of the top 150 on ESPN and outside of the top 250 on Rivals. Give Bryan Kelly credit for listing him at No. 3 on the B/R's Top 100 List.

He's a straight gamer who has an uncanny ability to cause turnovers and make plays on defense and special teams.

Randle might not be the most athletic linebacker or the strongest, but he produces and that should be what counts the most.

5. Rivals' Leroy Scott Outside The Top 250 Pick

6 of 10

Scott gets dissed by ESPN as well, but at least they list him inside their Top 150 at No. 135. He's Scout's No. 3 cornerback and 33rd overall prospect, but you won't find him inside the top 250 on Rivals.

Scott is a man-child, one of the pound-for-pound strongest players in the class, and an elite talent in both pass coverage and run support. He'll jam a receiver at the line with the best of them, will never back down from a bigger running back, and can lay a licking on ball-carriers like few can.

He does a great job of staying around the ball and making plays. The experts might underrate him, but the scouts at Texas didn't.

4. Scout's Brent Calloway at No. 126 Pick

7 of 10

Calloway is Rivals No. 9 overall prospect and one of the best linebackers in the country. He's a devastating pass-rusher and a two-way player who rushed for over 1,600 yards his junior year. Calloway took an average team all the way to the State Championship game with dominating play on both sides of the ball.

ESPN leaves him off of their top 150, but to put it lightly, more is expected from Scout; they don't usually miss on prospects this badly.

If Alabama can land Jadeveon Clowney to commit, they'll have one of the best outside linebacker duos in the country. That's the dream of every Crimson Tide fan at least.

3. ESPN's Lawrence Thomas at No. 137 Pick

8 of 10

Thomas is one of the top defenders in the country and has the build and athleticism to play either inside or outside or even move back and play safety or up and play defensive end. He excels as a pass-rusher, in pass-coverage, and run support.

There might not be a more well-rounded defensive prospect in the country and that's why it comes as as no surprise that he's ranks as No. 11 on Rivals and No. 15 on Scout.

That's also why its almost impossible to understand how he drops outside the top 125 on ESPN's list and can be found behind over a dozen other linebackers.

2. ESPN's De'Anthony Thomas at No. 63 Pick

9 of 10

Commitment: USC

If he was bigger than 5'9" and 165 lbs, Thomas might have been the top overall prospect in the 2011 class. Most scouts agree that he would rate as a 5-star talent regardless of which position he was projected as. Some see him as a running back while others see him as a cornerback.

Thomas wants to play both ways a win a Heisman; he's got the talent to do it too, so you can probably understand why it makes no sense he's outside the top 60 on ESPN.

1. Rivals' Kasen Williams at No. 246 Pick

10 of 10

Of all the experts selections, none standout worse than Rivals' pick of Kasen Williams at No. 246. He's arguably the No. 1 receiver of the 2011 class, ranked as the No. 19 prospect by Scout, underrated at No. 60 on ESPN, and honored with the No. 1 overall spot on the B/R Top 100.

He's a big, physical receiver with a well-rounded skill set and talent through the roof. He'll make all the catches, has incredible run-after-the-catch ability, and will wow you after only a few seconds of highlights.

Rivals missed on a few prospects this year, but disrespecting the best receiver in the class this badly is out of character.
