Reggie Bush: Should He Lose His Heisman Trophy?

Kelsey GivensJul 21, 2010

In the face of allegations of violating NCAA rules while playing for the University of Southern California, Reggie Bush is in jeopardy of losing his Heisman title. Although he didn’t follow the rules, he shouldn’t lose his title.

The Heisman trophy is awarded each year to the most talented and outstanding player in college football.

Even though the Heisman Trust would like to say they give the award to the most outstanding player with the best integrity, everyone knows the award is given simply to the most talented player in the league.

Bush and his family allegedly accepted benefits from an agent while Bush was still playing college football. Accepting the type of benefits they allegedly did is strictly prohibited by the NCAA.

While Bush most likely did break the rules, of all the NCAA rules he could have broken, these are by far not the most extreme.

Bush could have been found to have been taking performance enhancing drugs or partaking in illegal practice time, both of which would have affected his performance the year he won his Heisman award.

However, his actions had nothing to do with his performance. His performance was neither enhanced nor limited by his actions off the field.

If Bush has done something that would have improved or changed his performance on the field, he should definitely have his title stripped from him. However, he didn’t, and therefore he shouldn’t have his title taken away from him.

His actions had no connection to his performance, which is what won him the trophy in the first place. His pure talent and ability won him that award, and if the Heisman Trust were to take away this award, it would be like they were saying he wasn’t the most talented player in collegiate football that year.

While his actions may not have been the most honorable, they don’t change the fact that Bush was the most talented player in college football that year, which he has continued to prove through his time in the NFL.
