The Best Thing Arsenal and Arsene Wenger Can Do Is Sell Cesc Fabregas
Another summer transfer window, another on-going transfer saga. Despite Arsene Wenger remaining adamant that Arsenal will not be bullied into allowing Cesc Fabregas to return to Barcelona, it may be in the best interest of Arsenal and their manager if the deal took place.
There is no denying that Cesc Fabregas is a premier midfielder. He has showcased his quality numerous times for Arsenal. Most recently it was his assist that helped Spain become the new World Champions in South Africa.
Despite the quality he brings to Arsenal, Arsene Wenger must allow his captain to leave the Emirates Stadium to help the progression of the club.
Cesc Fabregas met with Arsene Wenger prior to the World Cup to vocalize his wish to return to Barcelona. Fabregas has been a great servant to the club, but a player who does not wish to remain at a club is the player really worth having.
If Cesc is forced to remain with The Gunners his mindset may be damaged.
Fabregas scored 19 goals in total last year, and created the same amount for his teammates, but if his dream to move back to the Nou Camp is shattered his love and admiration for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger may turn to resentment.
Arsene Wenger has a blueprint to guide him, in his arch-rival Alex Ferguson.
Ferguson fought tooth and nail to hold onto his star player. In doing so, Manchester United is now facing the consequences.
United held onto Ronaldo for an additional year before facilitating his move to Real Madrid. The extra year that United gained Ronaldo ended up costing them Carlos Tevez.
Manchester United is also facing some harsh realities about the lack of quality in the centre of midfield. This issue was masked by the quality that Ronaldo brought to the team, and in holding onto the Portuguese winger; United’s manager failed to notice or address the situation and is know facing the blunt of it.
Alex Ferguson missed the opportunity to sign Dutch star Wesley Sneijder, among others, who could have helped alleviate the troubles they are know facing in centre midfield.
Wenger should learn from Ferguson’s mistake and sell Fabregas to help progress his side. If he holds onto Cesc for another year he may find that when Fabregas departs he has more than just the loss of Fabregas to address in midfield.
Also, suitable candidates to replace the Spaniard, such as Yoann Gourcuff or Riccardo Montolivo, may not be available anymore.
Arsenal is blessed with sublime youth. Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey showed strong signs of having the quality to be a top-notch player for years to come.
Frenchman Samir Nasri also excelled in a more central position last year for Arsenal, as did Jack Wilshere who was on-loan with Bolton Wanderers.
Arsenal has major issues in defense and between the posts. They are stacked in midfield. Cesc Fabregas would undoubtedly be a loss to the team but Arsenal have the personal to deal with it, be it in players they already have, or in a manger who has an uncanny ability to spot talent.
Last season, Wayne Rooney showed that players will rise to the occasion when called upon. Rooney relished the opportunity bestowed to him by Manchester United when Ronaldo departed for La Liga.
There is no manager better than Arsene Wenger in football when it comes to shrewd transfer deals. If any manager was to be trusted to take £35 - £40 million and do multiple great deals for his club it would be him.
Wenger plucked Thierry Henry from Serie A obscurity and turned him into one of the greatest, if not the greatest, strikers in Premier League history. On top of that outstanding feet he also yielded a £13 million profit on the selling of Henry to Barcelona.
He also worked his magic on Patrick Vieria, Kolo Toure, and Emmanuel Petit, all of whom were bought by Wenger and sold on for vast profit, after serving their duty with Arsenal.
Let's not forget that it was Wenger who signed Fabregas for free as a youngster and helped mature and develop him into the player he is today. It is hard to argue with a profit of £35 - £40 million.
If Barcelona is unwilling to hand over the £50 million that Arsenal is asking for, they have numerous players who they could add to the mix to sweeten the deal.
Brazilian defender Henrique or Uruguayan defender Martin Caceres would give them much needed depth at the back. Zlatan Ibrahimovic or either of the youngsters Keirrison and Bojan could help Arsenal’s frontline in the coming years.
It would obviously be beneficial for Arsenal if Cesc Fabregas was happy to remain at the club and help them move forward towards titles, but the fact remains that he wants to leave and it is in Wenger and Arsenal’s best interest to complete the deal and move onward.
With Fabregas on the team for the last seven years, Arsenal has only managed to win an FA Cup. In the last five years they have failed to win a single competition. Arsenal cannot win anything less than they already have in the last five years with Fabregas on the team.
