Michigan Prospect Jake Fisher Chooses Wolverines
Many who follow Michigan recruiting wondered when the offensive line recruiting was going to heat up. Last night, Michigan started to burn a few logs with the commitment of 6'7", 270-pound Jake Fisher from Traverse City, Michigan.
Fisher has been a shooting up the ranking on Scouts this summer, due to his performances at camps in the Great Lakes State, and now comes in as a four-star prospect and one of the top players in the state. Scout rates him No. 6 in the state (and still climbing) and Rivals has him No. 18 in the state (and he will be higher when they re-rank).
The reason for his lack of big offers, and why Rivals still has him at three stars, is because he plays tight end in high school and grew three inches this past year. He is projected to play offensive tackle at Michigan with that big frame. So, being a tight end in high school and projecting to play tackle in college gives recruiting services "fits," since they can't really project him in a position that he is not currently playing.
Michigan just offered recently and Fisher jumped at it. His offer list had mostly MAC schools before Cincinnati, Michigan and Michigan State jumped on the band wagon.
Fisher is full of upside as he learns his position in college. He is guaranteed a redshirt, since he will continue to play tight end this fall in high school. We know he is an athlete if he is playing tight end right now, which fits Michigan's spread attack and should find a home behind "soon to be a star" Taylor Lewan.
Fisher is Michigan's eighth commitment to the 2011 class and second offensive lineman, along with center prospect Jack Miller. With two offensive linemen in the fold now, Michigan will still look to add three or four more. This is a really good pick-up for Michigan, with a kid that many have said has "mean streak." He is obviously a hard worker, and when Barwis gets his hands on him, look out!
