Is Brock Lesnar Number One? What To Make Of This Heavyweight Division.
After a wild two weeks in the Heavyweight division, the rankings were shook up a little bit. With the king of all kings Fedor Emelianenko losing for the first time, since the very first time. Emelianenko was undefeated for ten years, looked unbeatable in most of his outings. Until June 26th, 2010 when Fabricio Werdum submitted him sixty-nine seconds in the first round via triangle. Emelianenko who has been referred to by many as a robot built by Russian scientists. So once he was submitted, the number one spot in my eyes was wide open. Some people say its unfair to boot Emelianenko off the top spot because he was "caught". The number one pound for pound fighter in the world does not get tapped in a little over a minute, that is why he is getting bumped. Not only that he lost, but the way he lost.
This past Saturday at UFC 116 was one of my greatest memories as a MMA fan. Every fight had drama in it, every fight was back and forth, just an amazing event all around. The most amazing thing to me was Brock Lesnar. He has only had six fights in his MMA career. No, that is not a misprint, only six fights. He was getting the business in the first round. Took alot of shots on the feet and on the ground. I also found it interesting that he tried to land a throw and Shane Carwin stuffed it. Nothing was going right for Brock in the first round, dangerously close of getting the fight stopped by referee Josh Rosenthal, both of his eyes busted and a 265 pound, 5x glove wearing monster dropping hammers on him. His trainer Marty Morgan saying " You know what its like being on top of somebody throwing that many punches. He is tired. He is dead tired.....How you doing?" That is all it took for Brock to come out for the second and take control of that round. Submitting the undefeated Shane Carwin with a arm triangle/side choke. Brock Lesnar went through something most mortal MMA fighters go through in their career, he was getting beat and beat bad. He took alot of shots and was cut and nothing seemed to be going right for him, but that is what makes a champion. Somebody who can endure and come back.
" A champion is somebody who gets up when he cant" Jack Dempsey.
So with Fedor losing and Brock winning so big, who is number one? A guy who ruled the Heavyweights for 8 plus years or a newcomer professional wrestler who is gifted?
I think after this past saturday, it is without question Brock Lesnar. I think he beat a better opponent then Fedor lost too. Brock is just going to keep getting better, as long as he stays healthy. Brock's size and speed is going to give everybody and anybody trouble in that division. His wrestling pedigree is always going to his main component. He will get better hands in a few years, he has only been training boxing for a few years now, that will come in time. What I'm looking forward to seeing is Brock's transition into a submission fighter. He can control anybody on the ground, if he adds a submisson game, like what we saw saturday, then he will be the number one Heavyweight for a long time.
Next article I will be releasing my first top rankings for the Heavyweight division. We have a little over a month until the next UFC, so I will be releasing rankings for each division leading up to the card on August 1st.
Also, a great lightweight fight will be taking place on the Dream 15 card. Shinya Aoki vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri. Make sure you watch that fight.
Till next time...
