Mets Trade Rumors: Kevin Millwood Would Accept a Trade

Flushing Baseball DailyJun 2, 2010

This is the time of the year, two months before the trade deadline, that teams start to look at who is on team’s collective trade blocks.

One pitcher who’s name has been thrown around as potential trade bait this season is the Orioles veteran righty Kevin Millwood .

The thing about Millwood, who is in the final year of a five-year $60 million deal, is that he has a limited no-trade clause, meaning he has some say as to where he is traded to.

According to Dan Martin of the NY Post , that is not going to be an issue for the Mets as Millwood is open to the idea of pitching in Flushing.

“I wouldn’t mind pitching in New York,” the 35-year-old Millwood said. “It’s a great city. But it’s not really up to me whether I do or don’t."

“If the Mets called the Orioles and wanted to do something, I’d certainly look at it,” said Millwood. “If it came up, I’d definitely consider it a possibility.”

That is good news for the Mets who are likely going to be looking to add starting pitching if they are going to try to compete for a playoff spot this year.

It’s hard to tell what the Orioles are going to be looking for in a deal since Millwood is owed a decent amount of money left on the $12 million he gets paid this year.

Although the fact that he is a free agent at the end of the year, a type-B free agent at that, does make him more attractive as a rental.

That means there will be plenty of teams calling the Orioles up to inquire about his services. So if the Mets do work out a deal for him, it won’t be a simple salary dump.

Millwood is 0-5 so far this season, but that is mostly the fault of the Orioles offense. His 3.89 ERA and 1.27 WHIP are more than reasonable.
